The 9/11 Attacks: America’s Darkest Day
The 9/11 attacks, also known as the September 11th attacks, were a series of terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001. The attacks were perpetrated by a group of Islamic extremists associated with the terrorist group al-Qaeda, and resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people. The attacks were among the deadliest terrorist acts in world history and the single deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers in the history of the United States, with 343 and 72 killed respectively.
The attacks began early in the morning, when 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger jets. Two of the planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact of the planes caused the towers to collapse, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people, including office workers and first responders.
A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was flown into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside of Washington D.C. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was targeted at the White House or the U.S. Capitol Building, but crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to overcome the hijackers.
