1) Do you think whether the categories of consumers (VALS 2) defined by the SRI paradigm are an accurate predictor of consumer behavior for the advertisement you chose yesterday? Do the consumers of your ad fit in to one category, or many? Explain your answer using the paradigm.
2) Use the Stereotypes reading on ”speed bumps” to analyze which stereotype or category you identify with in the SRI paradigm? Conversely, explain why none of the categories describe you. What is your attitude toward being stereotyped by marketers. Explain your answer using evidence from the AQR.
You do need to make reference to the article, but do not simply summarize it. Please post your response by Thursday April 2 by 11:59 PM.
Post a minimum of two thoughtful replies to anyone else’s original posting or reply, due the following Friday April 3 by 11:59 PM. These postings should be no less than six complete substantive sentences, again using college level English. Be sure to add something to the conversation (e.g., discuss why you agree). This discussion is worth 5 points.
Also, here are 2 of my classmate’s answers that I need replies for. replies should only be about 5-6 sentences.
I think for the most part the categories of consumers (as listed in the reading on pages 163-166) is an accurate predictor of the behavior of consumers. I also agree with the article when it described how many people can fall into more than one of those categories throughout their lives. People can change overtime, therefore I do think it is more realistic to think a person could belong to more than one of those categories listed in the reading. The commercial I chose was of Bugs Bunny selling war bonds during World War II. I would argue this advertisement appeals to people who fall under the categories of “strivers” and “believers.” The “strivers” would find this appealing out of a desire to want to step up and help their country during World War II. The “believers” would find this commercial appealing because they would believe that buying war bonds during this time would help spread freedom around the globe and even keep freedom in the United States. Bugs Bunny states repeatedly in the advertisement that buying a war bond is equal to buying a share of freedom.
I think, at the present moment, I would fall under the category of “actualizers.” I am really not a big spender and I hardly pay attention to most commercials because I know they just want to sell me things which I already have, or things which I do not even need. These are some of the key characteristics for people who fall under the “actualizers” category.
The categories of consumption that were described in “What Are We to Advertisers” was an eyeopening topic to me. I knew advertisers targeted people based on characteristics but I did not think that there was a list like the one in the article. Although the list covered people in a general way, I expected there to be a more complex method of advertising (and there probably is). The consumers of my advertisement would ideally fit into the “achievers” category. Since my advertisement is for a PlayStation exclusive video game Detroit: Become Human, achievements play a large role so it would make sense for the consumers to be drawn to the rewards and prestige. The exclusivity of the game can also be for experiencers who want to get the product so that they can say they played the game. I am not sure what category I would fir into, but definitely not the Believers because I don’t tend to follow traditional code nor do I care if a product was made in America. For the most part, I would maybe consider myself a fulfilled consumer because I don’t buy things until the last minute when my current product is no longer useable. However, with this launch trailer, I would be an achiever since I purchased the game myself.
my reply discussion should be about the same length as these
