Based on past events, litter and trash on water bodies had been a great challenge, until the invention of water goats which has proved to be efficient in collecting all types of trash either plastic or can. A water goat is fixed with balls that give buoyancy and a net that filters all the trash in its path. With this invention it has been easy for the marine environmentalist to clear up the water bodies from trash. The emergence of this device has its promising factors and disturbing factors as discussed in this paper.
According to (dd), for the past 10 years there has been around 100 tons of trash that include, plastics, diapers, cans and even dead animals that have been collected by water goats. The challenge comes in when it comes to maintenance of these devices and cleaning them.
They have to be cleaned twice in a month and they have to be emptied after every collection. All of these require man power and skills to do it. Each of these devices comes at a cost, and the community can only afford a number of them but it is never enough. The costs vary from $ 2,300 to $3,200 however, enough funds are granted to purchase and install some of them but the hard task of maintenance is not provided for.
This clean up vary depending on the amount of rain, during heavy rainfall season; they have to be clean about two times in two weeks (did). Moreover, these devices vary in sizes there some that scan 100 feet while others are less than 80 feet. The large the device the more the trash it can scoop therefore, sometimes it becomes a challenge to move the trash due to its weight. Since the cost of maintenance is not meet, people have to volunteer, in cleaning them up and also moving the trash.
It is promising that, it only requires a few people to remove around 300 pounds of trash within a short time which would not have been the case without the water goats. Maximize built those water goats like ten years ago, and they are still using it, having recorded more than 100 tons of litter, and they are still embracing this technology, therefore it shows that they water goats are effective.
They are easy to handle since it only requires removing some of the pins from one side to empty them. Moreover, despite the cost, they are long lasting since they can last up to ten years. In Tampa bay, students from the schools around volunteer to do clean up. This is both beneficial to the student and the community as a whole since they offer their services. The students are able to learn littering has its impacts and consequences to the ecosystem, and they are able understand what it takes to remove the litter hence avoid littering.
The buoyance of these water goats also helps to sustain the life of some of the live animals that might have been caught in between the nets or some who just climb to get some food from the nets. According to (dd), there are new innovations of these water goats, which can now capture micro plastics by use of net made of special cloth hence more effective.
In conclusion water goat has its several short comings but still has its advantages that have promising outcomes to the ecosystem. Conservation of the marine has tremendously increased over the years due to the adoption of this technology. It is therefore up to the government to put more investment and funds for more installation and maintenance of these water goats so as to be able to save the marine life and conserve the environment.
