The Story of My Grandmother’s Dead Case Assignment
My grandmother died only a few months after my grandfather, even though she was in good health and.
My grandmother died only a few months after my grandfather, even though she was in good health and had seldom been sick in her life. My grandfather was a strong, independent man who worshiped my grandmother and took especially good care of her.
He never allowed her to work or to want for anything and remained deeply in love with her, often publicly displaying his affection. He was an old-fashioned, family doctor who made house calls and regarded his patients as his family. My grandmother’s entire identity revolved around being the “doctor’s wife” (that is how she often referred to herself). Her life was his life, and in hindsight, I realize she never developed any interests of her own.
In fact, she seemed to have no interests apart from his interests. As the doctor’s wife she took care of him, the family, and the house. When the children became independent, she became even more attentive to him and didn’t develop any other interests to replace the missing children. With the arrival of grandchildren, she became the happy mother all over again, caring for the grandchildren as often as she could
. When grandfather died, we all tried to visit her often and invited her to visit our families. She told us to give her a little time to adjust and said that for the present she preferred to stay home. About 3 months later, I found her lying in grandfather’s bed, having passed away from an apparent heart attack. In retrospect, I think that she had died in spirit when grandfather passed away. The death certificate records “heart attack” as the cause of death.
When I think about it, I had no grandmother. My grandmother was the doctor’s wife. When he died, her identity died and soon thereafter, her body. I prefer to substitute “broken heart” for “heart attack” on the death certificate.
