Dance of the Little People Story Discussion
Man taught his people the Dance of the Little People
Story: DANCE OF THE LITTLE PEOPLE
Once upon a time a little boy lived happily with his parents until, one day, his father suddenly died. Not long after that, the boy’s mother became ill, and although the boy looked after her as best as he could, he knew she too was dying. “Remember, child,” she said to him, “always walk with goodness in your heart. When you do, goodness will come back to you, and you will have nothing to fear.” Soon after, his mother died.
The boy moved to his uncle’s home, but his uncle was a selfish, lazy man. He sent the boy, dressed in rags and with bare feet, into the forest to hunt for their food. The boy became completely at home in the forest. Among the birds and trees and animals, he found peace and joy.
One day as he was walking through the forest, he decided to visit the high cliffs that overlooked the river. People had warned him away from this place. “The Little People live there,” they said, and the villagers feared the Little People. But the boy remembered his mother’s words. He knew he carried goodness in his heart, and so he had nothing to fear.
As he walked, he heard a sound in a nearby tree. When he looked up, he saw a squirrel scurrying through the branches. Before he could aim his bow to shoot, a tiny arrow sailed through the air past him. It missed the squirrel and dropped to the ground, and the boy heard a tiny voice call, “Try again, Brother. You keep missing him, and I’m starving.”
The boy looked down and was amazed to see, at his feet, two tiny hunters. His heart went out to them, for he saw that they could not possibly catch this squirrel. And so he took aim and loosed an arrow, and the squirrel fell to the ground.
He picked up the squirrel, bent low and handed it to the hunters. “This is for you,” he said. “You said you were starving.”
The two hunters, grateful for the young boy’s generosity, held out their hands to him. “Please come to visit our longhouse so that we might thank you properly,” they said.
The boy hesitated before answering. His uncle would be angry with him. But when he remembered his uncle’s unkindness and coldness, he happily agreed to join the hunters.
The three walked to the river’s edge, and there the boy saw a tiny canoe, smaller than his shoes. “Step inside,” the hunters said, and when the boy did, he became as small as the hunters and fit inside the canoe as easily as they.
Off they paddled, but before long the canoe rose into the air, flying above the trees and into the sky, finally coming to a deep, dark cave in the clouds. This was the place where the Little People dwelled.
When they emerged from the canoe, dozens of Little People gathered around them, and the two hunters told them about the boy’s generous gift.
