The Real and Idealized Self in Horney’s Mind
Horney discusses the difference between one’s true self and one’s idealized self. Those who live in accordance with their true selves are healthy, whereas those who live in accordance with their idealized selves are neurotic. Everyone has a conflict between their true self and their idealized self, but neurotics have it far worse. Blind spots, compartmentalization, rationalization, excessive control, arbitrary rightness, elusiveness, and cynicism are seven strategies that humans employ to deal with these tensions, according to Horney.
Answer the following questions based on your readings about Karen Horney’s approach to personality development:
1. Give an example of at least two devices from the list that you have seen someone use.
2. Horney has received both criticism and acclaim for introducing feminine elements to Freud’s theory. What are the similarities and differences between her theory and Sigmund Freud’s personality theory? Make a list of at least two parallels and differences.
Try to explain why someone could employ the primary adjustment strategies the way they do using Horney’s theory.
3. How does Horney’s thesis apply to people in general?
4. How may Horney’s theory assist a person in resolving the conflict between his real and idealized selves?
5.Is it deemed neurotic or healthy to use each of the selected equipment in the adjustment techniques?
***There must be no plagiarism, and if citing, references must be noted and used. Only one page is required to answer the five questions.
