The Future of Electric Vehicles Discussion
Two decades after General Motors pulled the plug on its first electric car (the EV1), automakers in the U.S. and abroad are embracing electric vehicles as the wave of the future. The U.S. government’s role in driving this switch from gasoline combustion engines has accelerated in recent years with increased subsidies to buyers and promises of public infrastructure support (e.g., recharging stations). However, Toyota – known for being an early innovator of hybrid technology – is pushing back. Having devoted considerable resources to hybrid and hydrogen technology, Toyota is concerned that pivoting to electric will put the company at a competitive disadvantage. In response, Toyota has been quietly lobbying members of Congress to slow down emissions regulations and reduce support for electric vehicles.
After reviewing the three attached articles discussing this issue, answer the questions below and type your responses into a MICROSOFT WORD DOCUMENT and upload it onto Blackboard. Be sure to number each response.
Purchasers of electric vehicles currently receive a federal rebate of _____________ and that amount is proposed to increase to ______________. What is the moral/ethical justification for this rebate?
Lithium batteries are the most costly component of an electric vehicle drive train, costing an average of ____________ per battery. Currently, where are most lithium batteries produced? What U.S. automaker recently announced plans to build new factories to produce lithium batteries. Economically, do you think this is a wise investment? Explain.
How does Toyota justify its opposition to lowering emissions standards and favoring electric vehicles over hybrid and hydrogen-powered vehicles? Does Toyota have a moral/ethical argument or are their concerns wholly economic in nature? Explain.
Finally, in consideration of the benefits and burdens to major stakeholders – consumers, automakers, taxpayers, the environment (or all humankind if you prefer) – is the U.S. (or any) government justified in favoring one technology (or industry) over another? Identify the competing concerns for each stakeholder in explaining your response.
