What are your community’s most pressing health concerns? Where do you think your efforts as a public health practitioner would be most effective? This question can be answered in a variety of ways. You should evaluate several aspects (e.g., perceived and actual needs) and different types of data sources when selecting the most significant needs (e.g., qualitative, quantitative, primary, and secondary). When assessing your community’s requirements, consider the following questions:
Perceived (qualitative data): What do the community’s citizens consider to be the most critical issues?
Actual (numerical data): What do the figures and statistics reveal?
What can you directly witness or collect data on using primary sources?
What can you check up in available resources as a secondary source?
You will use secondary data sources to gather information on genuine public health needs in your town for this Discussion. Consider which of those public health needs would be a top priority for building a public health program.To get ready for this discussion, do the following:
Review McKenzie et altext, .’s Chapter 4, Table 4.2 on page 85, as well as the video. Identifying a Health Issue. Consider the secondary data sources you could utilize to investigate public health issues.
Consider what you believe your community’s public health needs are.
Use the County Health Rankings website, Healthy People 2020, and other credible Internet sites to learn about your community’s genuine public health needs. To begin your search on the County Health Rankings website, click on your state, then select your county. To use Healthy People 2020, go to the Healthy People in Action tab and pick State Plans from the drop-down menu. Please include a description of the public health needs in the region of the country where you live if you do not live in the United States.
Concentrate on a specific health need in your community that you may prioritize for a public health initiative.
