Instructions for Writing a Paper
History Assignment in Spanish and English Description of the Question The following is an essay topic: A “charter society,” according to T.H. Breen, is the first group of people who move into an area and get to set the rules that other groups who arrive later must follow or else they move on. If this is true, how did the Spanish and English become the dominant groups by 1790? What specific social, political, economic, cultural, technological, and demographic factors led to the Spanish and English eventually becoming “charter societies,” while Native Americans, Africans, and other Europeans (especially the French, Germans, and Scots-Irish) did not? Please read the attached file for all instructions and bid only if you are confident that you will provide a good answer that meets all requirements. Please let me know if you require any additional reading. PAPER TOPIC #1 – HISTORY 10 Spring of 2016 PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE History Assignment in Spanish and English 1. You are composing an analytical essay on the following topic. Your essay should adhere to the formal conventions of college-level writing. 2. In grading essays, the following criteria will be used: a. The essay begins with an introductory paragraph that states the thesis clearly. A thesis statement such as “In this essay, I will show you why the others failed to become charter societies” is insufficient. Your thesis should be organized around specific reasons and/or specific cultural, economic, social, demographic, political, and technological factors that prevented them from dominating – and why this allowed the Spanish and English to become charter societies as a result. b. The essay is well-structured and organized. Every topic sentence is related to your thesis. As previously stated, your essay should be organized around the factors rather than ethnic groups. You will need more than five paragraphs due to the length of the essay. The five-paragraph essay is a good starting point for short papers and should be expanded upon as needed. There is a conclusion to the essay. c. The essay backs up its points with historical examples. You must provide evidence to back up your claim. Provide names, dates, events, examples of different groups’ experiences from the readings and lectures, and refer to documents by name, as well as their content and relevance. For example, statements like “Native Americans were unable to fight off English colonists” or “Africans found themselves enslaved” are overly broad. Give an example of a time when Native Americans were unable to fight off English colonists, or demonstrate where and how Africans were enslaved. d. The essay incorporates ideas and examples from the readings, with proper citation – remember how to cite and use the authors of the articles and documents from Ngai/Gjerde, Gjerde, and the History 10 Readings. You are expected to use all of the sources, including the appropriate chapters in Olson, Ngai/Gjerde, Gjerde, and the History 10 Readings, as well as lectures, threaded discussions, and websites used in the PowerPoints. Your grade will be based on how well you used these sources (especially the primary sources – you must use at least three documents), as well as the specific historical examples you used to support your analysis. When quoting or citing materials, you must include footnotes or parenthetical notes. If you are citing a lecture, include the Unit name and slide number (s). Students will be penalized if they use the words of other authors extensively in their essays without citing them. Changing a few words does not change who wrote what. See http://www.indiana.edu/wts/pamphlets/plagiarism.shtml for more information. Plagiarism is not acceptable or accepted by Santa Monica College or me; it is an academic violation that may result in a failing grade (0 points) on the assignment. e. The essay employs proper grammar and writing conventions. Please use complete sentences and proofread! Do not use the words “I,” “we,” “me,” “you,” or “us.” Because this is a history course about events that have already happened, use the past tense. f. The essay provides a thorough examination of the subject. This topic covers a variety of ethnic groups, focuses on the dominant groups, and spans the years 1492 to 1790. g. The essay responds to the question posed. 3. Your essay should be at least 5 pages long (approximately 1300 words) and double-spaced throughout (indent any lengthy quotes – typically if the quote goes more than three lines). This means that the paper can be longer, but keep in mind that length is not always indicative of a better paper. I will not count any works cited or title page when calculating the length of your paper; only the body of the essay will be counted. Please ensure that your name appears on the essay. 4. THIS IS IMPORTANT: Please attach your file in rich-text format (.rtf) rather than as a Word document. You can write your essay in Word, but when it comes time to save it, you should save it in.rtf format. This rule does not have any exceptions. If I am unable to open your document for any reason, you will lose two full letter grades, which means a “A” paper will only receive a “C,” and so on. If I am unable to open students’ essays, I will notify them via e-mail. You must check your e-mail during this time; I will notify you of the deadline by which your essay must be resubmitted (and you will be docked two full letter grades) or it will be rejected. Also, Dropbox is linked to Turnitin.com, which will check for plagiarism, including previous papers submitted by previous History 10 students. 5. Submit your essay in one.rtf file using the drop box (see the Dropbox tab) by 11:59 p.m. (PST) on Sunday, March 20, 2016. Papers received after that time will be docked one full grade. Late papers will only be accepted until Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at 11:59 p.m. (PST). AFTER ALL OF THAT: PAPER TOPIC #1 is as follows: A “charter society,” according to T.H. Breen, is the first group of people who move into an area and get to set the rules that other groups who arrive later must follow or else they move on. If this is true, how did the Spanish and English become the dominant groups by 1790?
