Description/Paper Instructions The attached digital anthropology file is a task that I created through a game called Over watch before. I want you to use this to write a new essay along the Field Report 2 outline. All citations or paraphrases should only be brought from course-reading or course-materials. Digital Anthropology Field Work Digital Anthropology Fieldwork: Over Watch (Game) Communicative Event: Game chatting Communicative Situation: While they playing a game Communicative Repertoire: TG: Too Good DPS: Damage Per Second HP: Hit-Points. It means the amount of health a character has. POTG: Play of the Game. This refers to the highlight that is played at the end of a match. Push: Taking aggressive action as a team to move the other team off of a capture point or payload, by eliminating them or driving them off. VC: An abbreviation of Voice Chat Ult: Ultimate. It means an ultimate ability of character Leaver: Someone who leaves a match early Troll: in terms of a person, is someone who purposefully provokes a negative reaction regardless of topic or situation. SETTING Place: Overwatch is basically a game where 12 players are divided into two teams and occupy the opponent’s base. Also, Overwatch allowed their players to watch other players’ game. I used it to watch my friend’s game. I participated in two games and observed 24 people. PARTICIPANT IDENTITY Anonymity, an online trait, is also apparent in this game. So players can express themselves more and enjoy the game without worrying about the factors of their age, sex, and so on. END I analyzed the terms, behaviors, and attitudes which used by participants in the game. Act Sequence I went into a friend’s game through the functions (overlooking) in the game and watched how 12 players interact with each other while playing the game. Each player acts according to his or her own characters’ role, and the interaction and behavior have changed little by little. KEY Aggressive Tone: Aggressive attitudes were observed in the friction between players of the same team. When a player fails to fulfill his role and dies or fails to meet other players’ needs. In this conflict, most players did not respond to the insult against them, or they chose a character that was out of context and ruined the game (Trolling). Also, they also reported players who used bad language after the game. Encouraging Tone: On the other hand, there were also players that encouraged other players if they were losing the game or if they were good at playing the chosen character. They said “it is just a game”, “Make yourself comfortable”, “I hope you’ll be lucky next time”. They encouraged other players by using these statements. NORMS: Anonymity (every player can use nicknames) Report Vote (recommendation) GENRE: ANALYSIS: Overwatch is basically a game in which teams compete with each other. So there are often arguments. To adjust this, the company created a function called reporting a non-manner player and also a player recommendation function to increase a harmonious game. There are many people who express themselves freely and enjoy playing games by virtue of anonymity, but I think reporting and recommendation functions were appropriate because there are many players who abuse anonymity too. Also, players who receive a lot of reports are banned from chatting or are penalized for playing games. Raw Notes I tried playing cargo mode (cooperating with team) and death match mode (individual match). Cargo mode is a team competition game that moves each team’s cargo first to the enemy’s base. So it provokes many interactions between players. Contrary to worries, there were more encouraging chats than blames. On the other hand, Death match had a lot of dirty chatting because it was a private game (individual match) without team members. Conclusion Through this research, I found that while there are many encouraging chats in games as civic awareness develops, there are still many online players that criticize others using anonymity. I think that the anonymity that respects people’s free speech and expression is important, but the anonymity that invades on others should be limited. For example, the reporting and recommendation functions of Over watch game encourage people to use the right anonymity. Therefore, people must understand the disadvantages of anonymity by themselves and think about how to solve the problem without invading the freedom of expression of the individual. Field Report 2 Adjustments for Online Instruction In this field report, please let us how you will be obtaining interview data or using previously obtained observations, or other sources to complete the required course paper, due on the Wednesday of RRR week. This submission is now due on Wednesday, April 8. We will have only ONE additional Field Report this semester — it will be due on Monday, April 24. Part A. Simple Statement of the Project you conduct for Your Project Options for the Semester Long Study Project
Part B. Your Specific Study Site or Interviewees How did you select your new study project and your alternative venue and method of observation or data gathering? Why is it personally and sociologically interesting? What issues in sociological social psychology or the development of identities under social influence do you think your plans will be able to speak to? First impressions of your venue or interviewees? Difficulties in establishing the Project? Receptivity of interviewees? What do you intend to do to obtain information necessary for writing your paper on your “venue” or the identities of interest? Part C: Preliminary Observations and Significance for Developing an Analysis Please report 2 to 3 preliminary observations about teaching and learning that you have developed from your initial work. State these observation in narrative form, “I observed…,” “My interviewee explained…” “The documents showed….” etc. Then examine your reported observations or findings, and begin to tease out elements of the analysis your final paper will require. Features of a social setting, observed or reported on, X à Effects on the identities of your subjects, Y
Part D. Using Course Themes, Concepts, Sources (Only) Mention three concepts from course readings or lectures that are inspiring your selection of a topic and study approach. How might they shed light on the significance of features of a social setting, a network of interaction, or digital platform like the one are working with? How can they identify the sociological significance of the effects you have observed to be associated with your subjects’ experience with particular social settings or features of the study site you have identified? |
