Look at the five questions below and select four to respond to in no more than 400 words each. You don’t have to write 400 words for each question; instead, you should write clearly and simply. There will be a total of 20 points available for each question.
Your responses to these questions should demonstrate your understanding of the problems covered in class, but you should not just repeat what we discussed in class. Make your own unique argument in your responses. Demonstrate that you’ve thought about your response! The most crucial thing is to start your response with a clear and succinct thesis statement that answers the inquiry. Don’t waste space with unnecessary introductions, summaries, or fluff! Answer in full phrases and paragraphs, of course.
You should use short, concise quotations in your replies, but your exam does not have a Works Cited page. Indicate the source of the text using context references (e.g., in Cather’s story…) and, if available, a page number in parentheses.
Use your imagination when selecting texts to write on for each question! A less obvious choice might sometimes yield the most intriguing insight. Any of the works we’ve read this semester, including all of the films, books, and critical texts, may be included. Most importantly, your arguments must be supported by evidence from the texts! You should rely on your notes and class discussions, but no further research or outside sources should be used. All of your responses should be based on what you learned in class.
1) At the beginning of the semester, Garrard characterized environmentalism as a moderate viewpoint that includes concern for environmental concerns and even direct action, as well as a wish to retain or increase their quality of living as generally defined. To put it another way, environmentalists don’t advocate for “radical social change.” Using Garrard’s description, name a writer or character you’ve met so far who you’d classify as an environmentalistwhat environmental concerns do they have, and, more significantly, how is their activism limited?
2) While we will delve deeper into the issue of “seeing” when we consider John Berger’s article “Why We Look at Animals,” we have already looked at the importance of the visual in a number of works. Compare and contrast how two works express humans’ interaction with nature through vision/the visual/the eye.
3) Because of the rigors of pregnancy and nursing, women have typically been more closely identified with nature (and divorced from cultural production), as Kate Soper argues.
However, both of the novels we’ve read, O Pioneers and Tar Baby, have key female characters, Alexandra and Jadine, who are neither mothers nor very maternal. Compare and contrast what the characters Alexandra and Jadine represent in terms of the female-natural relationship.
4) In our studies on Willa Cather’s O Pioneers, we debated whether the plot was driven by human actions and impulses or by the environment. Explain whether you believe the novel is inherently ecocentric or anthropocentric, and support your claim with facts.
5) While we spent a lot of time in class talking about how Toni Morrison’s novel Tar Baby is inspired by the Br’er Rabbit folktales, we spent less time talking about the mythology of the blind horsemen, who were enslaved people who were blinded when they first visited the island. Morrison suggests that Son joins them in the woods at the end of the book. Examine the importance of the blind riders in the novel’s ecological/environmental story. Why do you believe Morrison ultimately chose this path for Son?
