Poaching, the illegal hunting of animals, is decimating rhinoceros populations across the globe. Rhinoceroses are some of the world’s most endangered animals, with several species teetering on the brink of extinction. Rhinoceros horns are highly prized in traditional Asian medicine, where they are believed to have healing properties. However, scientific research has debunked these claims, and rhinoceros horns have no proven medicinal value. Despite this, demand for rhinoceros horns remains high, fueling a multi-billion-dollar illegal trade.
The rhinoceros poaching crisis has hit Africa the hardest, with South Africa being the most affected country. According to the South African Department of Environmental Affairs, more than 7,100 rhinoceroses have been poached in the country since 2008.
