For this research paper you will identify, for your organization or an organization of your choosing (i.e., church, community organization, scout troop, etc.), a specific area, problem, dilemma, or opportunity that requires significant change. You will then formulate a plan for implementing change as it relates to your identified change opportunity using an identified change theory. Remember, the central challenge in change is changing people’s behavior. While one can make the business case for change through analysis, productivity, cost savings, etc., it is the people who must be convinced and have buy-in to change. Please be sure to remember the “people factor” when writing your paper.
Things to consider when identifying your change opportunity: What is the change I am analyzing? Who will be affected by the change? What is the best possible outcome? What is the worst possible outcome? What is the communication plan for the change? Who participates in the change decision? What do you stand to lose? To gain? What past experiences with change have the affected groups had? It will be necessary to apply ALL you have learned (and that we have discussed during this course). Write as if you were going to professionally consult and present this to your company/organization.
The “end result” is to get this company/organization on the road to becoming a “teaching organization”. You will follow the steps of Kurt Lewin’s Action Research model in your paper. These steps would be: First: Explain which areas you are going to focus on in your organizational plan for change. Second: Explain how you gathered data and what data you gathered to substantiate your need-for-change plan. Third: Explain how (or who or what) you have analyzed and how you have interpreted your data. Fourth: What SPECIFICALLY is your action plan to implement these changes?
Fifth: Explain how you are going to monitor AND ASSESS these steps to change to ensure that your stated plans can and will be carried out AND that you can empirically substantiate the changes will take place. Last: Explain how you will make adjustments to your plan for incorrect or misinterpreted data or for changes you attempted that did not take hold or “stick”. You may integrate any other change models we have discussed in class as additional information. The paper will be a minimum of 15 pages using APA style and should include at least five references.
