Lone Wolf Attacks in the U.S.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the history of lone-wolf attacks and their radicalization in the U.S. Based on the analysis of various literatures; lone wolf attacks are not new in the country. The U.S. has experienced lone wolf attacks since the 70s. However, modern attacks have a different trend, particularly due to the influence of terrorist groups and local organizations like white supremacists and nationalists. These groups contribute to the dissemination of their ideologies to the attackers. The use of the internet has particularly made it easier to access information and orchestrate their attacks. While some of these lone wolves are self-radicalized, others are radicalized by sponsoring groups such as Islamic extremists. Unfortunately, lone wolves prove difficult to prevent due to their peculiar and undetectable nature of operation. Using community support programs, the level of radicalization can be lowered. Similarly, security agencies can rely on the community to get information and flag the most vulnerable persons as preventive measures. Preventing lone wolf attacks requires a deliberate and multi-faceted approach to understand the underlying triggers and taking preventive measures to save lives from the community, private sector, and security agencies.
