Introduction (1)
Hello everyone, we are group one from tutorial five. Today we are going to talk about health monitoring mobile applications. This is our presentation structure. Our presentation is going to cover social, cultural, ethical, and legal issues about health monitoring mobile application. Finally, we will give our resolutions and make a conclusion. Ok, let’s start with the introduction part. Health monitoring mobile application is a kind of application that anyone who has a smartphone or tablet can download it into their mobile devices and in this way this application can detect human’s physical or even psychological condition. Please imagine how does it work. Nowadays, smartphone has many powerful accessories such as heart rate sensor, gravity sensor, and GPS sensor. In this way, your smartphone can easily know walking or running distance, then it will transfer these data to health applications in order to calculate your active energy or your calorie consumption. There will come some questions that how it can help us in health or how it can improve our quality of life. With many kinds of data, like data about calorie, body mass index, energy, and heart rate, this application will tell you whether you are in a healthy state or whether you have heart disease. Cooperate with health monitoring ring that you can wear it on your wrist, it can show your sleep condition. More interesting things are behind. In recent years, except for heart disease and obesity, people find this application can detect whether you have a tendency to depression, and it can even be used as contraception applications. We will show you some details later. The next part is about stakeholders.
Facts and stakeholders (2)
In this part I will introduce the facts and stakeholders and the analysis approach, first of all in terms of stakeholders, the user is no longer the only stakeholder, our health monitoring mobile application is a system that contains a large number of stakeholders. It can be divided into two parts, the primary stakeholders and the secondary stakeholders. The primary stakeholder is necessarily the patient who is using the app, and the app will test the patient’s health indicators and track the patient’s condition. There are also the developers of the app, who create the app and keep it running and maintain the user’s use. Finally, I think, the healthcare system is also a major stakeholder, whatever doctors and nurses, who can save time if they use this app correctly.
Then for the secondary stakeholders, there are the relevant government departments, as the government can monitor and regulate the application to protect the rights of the user. At the same time, the government will also set the rules to standardize the use of the user. Secondary stakeholders also include competitors who can provide similar services. In addition, they’re still some secondary stakeholders, such as agents and partner platforms.
Analysis approach (2)
For this project, our group agreed we should use the four step approach. The step 1 is to Analyze the facts of the situation, we did some research, understanding the health needs of users and some stakeholders that I said before. Step 2 is to isolate those issues, this part my group member will explain. And move on to step 3,we will list our resolutions. Finally ,the step 4 is to prepare some strategies and rules.
Social issues (3)
I will discuss social issues and cultural issues. From the social perspective, there are two issues I will discussing, excessive waste of medical resources due to inaccurate information and excessive pursuit of so-called “health”.
As mentioned before, applications could detect a human’s physical or even psychological condition, so people could know immediately when they are in an unhealthy condition. However, once the information from the application might be inaccurate and show that users are in an unhealthy condition, a large number of users will go to see doctors thus making excessive waste of medical resources.
Moreover, the application could show users about their health data and the range of health standards. Majority of mobile applications could help users calculating their BMI (Body mass index), however, there is an example according to Kelly, Firth, a model from Sydney, exercises regularly and takes care of her health and confident on her appearance, but she was decided to lose 6kg because her BMI was higher than average and classifies as ‘overweight’. Melbourne eating behavior specialist Dr. Kausman considered this behavior is wrong, losing weight to meet the health standards is irrational and can have adverse health effects. In this case, these health standards easily cause people to be too obsessed with data to ignore other important things or pursue health excessively then have adverse health effects.
Cultural issues (3)
From the cultural perspective, the issue may occur is different cultural backgrounds may have different healthy standards. According to the Australian Government Department of Health, the healthy range of BMI in Australia between 18.5 and 24.9. But if the people have Asian background are lower than the standard and the people who hare Polynesian origin will higher than the standard. Besides, according to WHO, there are different proportions of adults in the range of BMI standards due to different cultural backgrounds.
Ethical issues (4)
the ethical issues in health monitoring mobile application industry with four aspects which are privacy, accuracy, property and accessibility. With the rapid development of information technology, people are getting used to share their slight information to exchange specified services via internet. Privacy has long been considered “the right to be left alone” during various kind of transactions. For health application companies, it is kind of legal to collect and consolidate information in the mobile application with or without informing users and post the crowd information which ordered by different data row. As the researchers from Tokyo University pointed out in their report, people’s conformity might drive them to define their own mental and physical situation according to the common sense. In this scenario, users of application might acquiesce to share their slight information to exchange standard parameters in specific health field. However, there is no one can assure that the standard average parameters that mentioned are reliable and accurate.
In terms of information property, there is a few health application would claim who exactly owns information and who owns the channels of distribution. The users’ information could be shared or sold to other organization probably without being informed.
Last but not the least, accessibility of information is quite ambiguous in the age of information worker. Users would never know the person or organization have a right to obtain personal information with what protections and under what conditions.
Legal issues (5)
Confidentiality of Data
For health applications, they may include the patient’s personal information, diagnostic information, or other important information. If the company violates relevant data security guidelines for commercial advantages, such as leaking patient information or illegally trading patient information, etc. The enterprise will face civil or even criminal penalties.
Accuracy issue
Due to the cost and volume limitations of monitoring wearing equipment, the application may not be able to achieve the accuracy of professional medical instruments. If the product sometimes cannot accurately report an emergency, the company may face the patient’s claim and face penalties from the Department of Justice.
Business issues (5)
Compatibility
This type of application must be compatible with most wearable devices. If the enterprise focuses on research and development applications, compatibility and accuracy are subject to wearable device manufacturing companies; if both develop simultaneously, wearable device research and development funds and product production lines need to be invested, and these require a lot of financial support to become feasible.
market competition
Technologies such as deep learning, artificial intelligence, and IoT are the future trends in health monitoring procedures. Major companies in the world, such as Google, IBM, and Johnson & Johnson have related products that have been put into the market. This will undoubtedly create huge competitive pressures on emerging companies that want to join the market.
Resolution (6)
Hello everyone, I am Jason, I am going to talk about the resolution and conclusion part for you guys. As far as I am concerned, the resolution can be discussed from three perspectives. User, Government and enterprise. From the perspective of users, what they can do to improve the security of their personal information is to set a complex password and try their best to keep their account safe. Well, from the perspective of enterprise, a good way to reduce the cultural issue is to make the application much more flexible, which means this app should have more than one standard of evaluating whether the users are healthy or not. In other words, this app should adjust to the local cultural or lifestyle. In terms of the Government perspective, they can better manage the enterprises by legislation, for example they can establish a new law for this kind of mobile applications specifically. These enterprises will be strictly restricted by the new law. What’s more, the government can offer more financial support to the developers of the app to improve the technology like improving the accuracy.
Conclusion (6)
In conclusion, the main goal of our presentation is to introduce the Health Monitoring Mobile Application and its issues. We can see……()………… In short, this kind of application may be helpful to reduce the pressure of the medical system in the future if the accuracy can be highly improved because many patients can solve some of their own health problems via this application instead of going to a local hospital. That’s all about our presentation, thank you.
