Intermediate Qualitative Methods Final Research report
AIM AND SUBSTANCE (Only Qualitative Methods in this paper, no quantitative methods)
The final assignment brings together all you have learned throughout the course to produce a polished report on your research and analysis.
You concluded your preliminary research report with a new research question. You will answer that question by analyzing all the interviews in your research group, extending (and if necessary revising) the coding scheme you developed in earlier assignments. All the interviews’ transcriptions are uploaded.
You will write up your findings in a final research paper, which presents your answer as an argument, explains your method and supports your argument with evidence from your data.
The essay should be between eight and twelve (8-10) pages and contain the following sections. You may use material from your preliminary report as appropriate, taking into consideration feedback from instructors and your peers. (I have uploaded the preliminary report and the comments from the prof.When writing this paper, please analyze it according to the teacher’s Suggestions.)
Introduction (1⁄2 page max):
Introduce your argument using the structure described in tutorial. Give the reader some background context, explain your problem (ie: your research question) in relation to that background, and provide an answer/argument as your inference. Given what you have learned from coding these interviews, what’s your answer to your research question?
Theoretical framework (1-2 pages):
This section will define the concepts that establish your argument and how they fit together. Every subsection of your findings should correspond to a concept described in your theoretical framework.
Concepts are labels you have applied to behaviors and/or attitudes described in your data so that you can recognize them in other situations. They are either your focused
codes or categories that you have abstracted by grouping several codes together (see the coding video by Dr. Woodall for reference).
Explain these labels. What characteristics describe them? How do they relate to each other? Are they different types of some overarching category (ie: different responses to a shared experience, or different identities/types of relationships)? Is one concept a cause (or an effect) of the other? Are they mechanisms that encourage people towards particular outcomes?

In this section you should explain your approach to answering your question. What paradigm is your project working in, and how has it influenced your approach to data gathering and analysis? What kinds of inferences (descriptive or logical) are you able to draw from your data, and how does your argument reflect that? Draw on readings from the syllabus as appropriate to support your explanation.
You might also reflect on your positionality in this section, if appropriate. How has your own biography influenced your motivations towards the research problem, the conduct of the interview and/or your interpretation of the transcript?
Findings (4 pages)
Here you should present and explain the evidence that supports your argument. Organize this section by concept (or theme). Provide quotes from your data that show how these concepts operate in your theory and explain their relevance: how does this demonstrate the concept you’re describing and its contribution to your argument?
Discussion and conclusion (1/2 – 1 page)
Briefly summarize your findings and explain how they support your argument. You should also consider limitations of your argument and possibilities for future research. Is there another way to explain your findings? To what situations or conditions or groups of people does your argument apply? Are there still unanswered questions that another study could answer?

FORMAT AND CITATION
Write your essay in 12 point Times New Roman Font, with 1” margins, double-spaced.
Materials should be cited in-text in ASA format and referenced in the bibliography as they are listed in the syllabus.
Interviews should be cited in-text as ([participant pseudonym]: 2019) and referenced in the bibliography as follows: Interview with [participant pseudonym], [date of interview].
