Doing Justice Justice is the aspect that plays an essential role in my life. I find that it is closely related to the meaning of the quality of conforming to the principles of rules, laws, agreements, and reasons. This concept presupposes rightfulness and lawfulness for the sake of well-being, both emotional and physical. People should represent others, value their will, and support in difficult situations. Hence, justice is about doing good and helping people cope with difficulties, as well as contributing to their physical and emotional well-being. I volunteered in the Nursing Home facilities in Bloomfield and had an opportunity to deal with the senior citizens. Although my volunteering practice lasts for a short period of time, the experience I got is valuable and will assists me in academic and professional life. However, it also enabled me to see the importance of justice in the life of every person, elderly one in particular. I have realized that justice is a pleasure of being treated with kindness, fairness, compassion, and empathy. Unfortunately, when parents become old, children often forget about the moral values and about their parents. I have noticed that the senior citizens tend to experience a number of concerns and need help from the healthcare personnel and their relatives, mostly children. I have spent many years working with older people. I have experienced various situations and I find it very sad when children have no time to take care of their parents, as well as make thousands of excuses why they do not visit or phone them. I am strongly convinced that the time spent with parents is invaluable and we should appreciate it. Also, I have come across the situations when children, who are grown up individuals, tell lies to their parents just only because they do not want to care about them and provide even the least amount of help because they are interested in their career, academic, or personal life rather than in their parents. Unfortunately, such cases become more and more frequent in the modern society and this makes me very upset. I have seen many old people who stay in Nursing homes for years and none of the relatives visits them. However, it is not related to the fact whether they were good or bad parents. Some of them spent years caring about their children, forgetting about career, personal development, and even personal life. They dedicated all their life to their offspring, giving them love, care, and even wealth. Consequently, they were sent to Nursing homes and left forgotten as they have become obstacles and burden due to their age, illness, and desire to be noticed and heard. However, children are morally obliged to care about their elderly parents. The conditions and care provided in Nursing homes are different. In many cases, nurses are not very kind and caring with the elderly people, showing disrespect and lack of desire to help. It is a real pity to observe the situations when old people are unable to eat themselves, and do other things, and no one is nearby to help. As a result, they may call for help for hours and the personnel does not come. In such situations, children should control the conditions and attitude to their parents. Moreover, it should be of highest priority to help parents. Hence, children could have helped them and taken care of them at home. Unfortunately, there are also cases, when the personnel comes too late and the situation becomes irreversible. I cannot stand aside when the children come and tell lies, especially when I know the truth. Disease, for example, dementia, should not be the reason for sending parents to a Nursing house. Many ill elderly spend their end of life in complete loneliness. The situation has significantly changed the meaning of justice in my consciousness. I have realized that justice contributes to the maximization of utility and welfare, and presuppose the cultivation of virtues and reasoning about the common good (Sandel, 2009). Hence, we should seek justice in every aspect of our life. Once, I have witnessed a situation when an old person required support of the children. However, they always told that they are too busy to come and even talk with their mother. I have accidentally noticed that they hired a flat nearby and they could have visited their mother even every day. The mental state of the elderly went worse as she needed communication, support of the family members, or just any signs that some loves her. I was astonished that none wanted to show even the tiniest sign of affection. Consequently, I contact a responsible person and explained the situation. Also, I asked to talk to the children and encourage them to come as it would improve the mental condition of the elderly woman. Finally, several organizations became interested in the case and they promised to pay more attention to such cases. I find that this has slightly contributed to the concept of justice in term of the elderly. Thus, justice is not only about the judicial system, it is humanity, love, equality, and connection with others. I am a student and I cannot do much to make a difference in the life of people. However, I do my best to show people that justice should be present in every aspect of our life. Also, justice is of vital importance when it comes to the older population who need communication, love, or even a hug. Therefore, I will work hard to bring justice into the life of old people and will participate in numerous initiatives to soften the hearts of people. Reference Sandel, M. J. (2009). Justice.
