Human Resource Management Discussion
If I had to pick between “making” competent people through training and “buying” them through selection, I would go with the former option because it gives me more control over the final product. Training is a longer-term option that is both more cost-effective and beneficial to producing competent staff. According to Cascio and Aguinis (2011), training employees allows them to learn the information and skills necessary to accomplish their job obligations and to progress within the organization. This makes training an investment in the future of the organization. Employees who have received training are also able to become more productive because they have a greater understanding of the goals and objectives of the organization as well as how the role that they play fits into the bigger picture. In addition, training can assist to boost employee morale and motivation by giving workers the impression that the business values their contributions and is making an investment in their professional growth (Cascio & Aguinis, 2011). This perception can help workers feel more positive about their jobs.
When deciding whether to “make” competent people or “buy” them, there are a number of considerations to take into account on both sides of the question. The first factor to consider is the financial commitment required for each alternative. Although training may be an expensive investment up front, it frequently proves to be a better value over the long term than recruiting and onboarding new staff members. In addition to this, the business needs to take into consideration the amount of time and resources that will be necessary in order to design the training program and ensure that it is effective. The company must also take into account the number of qualified applicants who are interested in the position, as well as the potential consequences for the company if the candidate is not a suitable fit for the position. Last but not least, Cascio and Aguinis (2011) state that the business must take into account the potential influence the decision will have on the morale and motivation of its workforce before reaching a final decision.
In conclusion, when deciding between “making” competent personnel and “buying” employees with the necessary skills, training is frequently the longer-term solution that is less expensive overall. Training provides employees with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully carry out the responsibilities of their jobs and to advance within the organization. In addition, the business needs to take into account the costs that are associated with each of the options, the amount of time and resources that will be required to construct the training program, the availability of candidates who meet the qualifications, and the potential influence on employee morale and motivation.
