Definition:
Public art/design is an artwork or element of design that is either temporarily or permanently located in a public space. The word “public” indicates community involvement, so public art/design also seeks to create and inspire relationships and communication.
Public art can best be defined as a form of collective community expression that enhances the built or natural environment.
Assignment Objective:
The purpose of this assignment is for you to exercise your ability to constructively respond to a work or art while also investigating its purpose, artist’s intent and information about the artist.
This assignment requires you to physically travel to where the chosen work is located and to examine it in person. This is your opportunity to use your own voice, please write in the first person. *NOTE – Public art on campus is not allowed. I want you to leave campus and explore!
Assignment Guidelines:
- To locate and view a work of local public artwork by using this website:
Winnipeg Art Council – Public Art
http://winnipegarts.ca/wac/pubart-gal/
- To understand the significance and communicative potential of artwork located in the public sphere.
*This means you must not only choose locate, view and record, but you must do extra research to dig into the intent of the piece, history of the artist, artist statement for their piece and other information that you can find. A brief bio is not enough.
- To practice critical observation and writing skills. *This means part of the essay requires you to write a visual analysis. If you have not done this in our class, or need a refresher- please refer to your mandatory text: Sylvan Barnet’s Writing About Art.
Procedure:
- Select ONE public art work and identify its location
- Visit the location of the identified artwork and take a SELFIE photograph of pubic work. This shows me that you physically attended the location of the selected piece. You must also include an image or images of the piece that you are not present in. You can take these yourself, or pull them off the internet.
- Reflect, consider and take notes about initial response to piece, what is about and what is the artist trying to communicate to the public.
- Conduct research to support your essay and provide information on the piece.
- Write your essay – make sure to include a Thesis statement, main body paragraphs and a conclusion. A title page is mandatory as is a bibliography. You MUST CITE all information that is not your own idea or response. Chicago Style only.
Assignments are to be written in 12 point Times New Roman font, and must be double spaced. Margins are to be normal- not wide or thin. If your formatting is off- you will lose marks. Do not submit an assignment with incorrect formatting.
Evaluation: Students will be evaluated based on their ability respond to art and do minor research, to think critically, but also on grammar, syntax, spelling and sentence structure.
- Title Page (See example on UMLearn) – Mandatory failure to include will result in a zero grade.
- Format Requirements – Mandatory failure to follow instructions will result in a zero grade
- Images – 3 marks (however failure to include one will result in a zero grade) *Make sure you cite your images properly.
- Work Cited/Bibliography – 3 marks (however failure to include one will result in a zero grade)
- Main Body of Essay – 14 marks
What is a Visual Analysis?
A Visual Analysis is the basic unit of art historical writing. Sources as varied as art magazines, scholarly books, and undergraduate research papers rely on concise and detailed visual analyses. The purpose of a visual analysis is to recognize and understand the visual choices the artist made in creating the artwork. By observing and writing about separate parts of the art object, you will come to a better understanding of the art object as a whole. A visual analysis addresses an artwork’s formal elements—visual attributes such as color, line, texture, and size.
