ENG4U: King LearVerbal-Visual Essay (Assignment IV)
Due on May 28 and 7% of your mark
A Verbal/Visual Essay is a mixture of the following: images (drawings, pictures/photos) and words (quotations/passages, thematic or personal statements) that are taken from the text which show that you have been able to interpret the significance and content of the particular work of literature.
Your task is to prepare a verbal-visual essay which identifies and explores one specific theme from King Lear. Choose one of the topics provided from the list. You will submit all components for evaluation.
Task 1: VisualComponent:
You will create a visual component using drawings, sketches, and/or photographs with a thesis statement, 6 short quotes with one sentence explanation for each based on your topic choice. You will need six images in total. You do not need to be an artist; therefore, you may also use computer generated art, traditional art, or etc. The expectation is that you use and apply those skills that you have in the best way you can, so the assignment is not about art but insight.
The images you select are support for your topic, so they should focus on the ideas created within the play. You should attempt to have your images work together to create one over all image or impression. The visual component must be at most two pages in total!! Don’t make a ppt or many pages of explanations with haphazard/random order of images.Choose symbolic over literalrepresentations (Using images from movie versions is not suggested at all!). If you are using images from different sources, work(s) cited is required.
Within thesix visuals, you will incorporate:
- A thesis statement (Don’t be general; even include the three sub-points to have a clear and thorough thesis)
- 6short quotations from the play about one to three sentences in length
- 6 short statementsin about one sentence in length which represent what you believe is important
All statements should relate to the visual component of the piece. You will need to incorporate thesestatements into the images in an effective, meaningful, creative way.
Task 2: Analytical Paragraph
You must also provide a brief analytical paragraph(300 words) justifying the choices you have made in your visual essay. Don’t include this part on the visual component; do so on a new page.
Possible Topics:
- Old Age
- Lust for Power
- Justice
- Love
- Loyalty
- Appearance vs. Reality
- Rivalry
- Jealousy
- Blindness
- Madness
- Sight vs Insight
