Phase I that I submitted – Topic was Ethical Behavior in the Workplace
The importance of ethical behavior in the workplace should not be underestimated. Ethical issues can be the difference between a hospitable work environment and a hostile work environment (Onlineethics.org, 2015). It is therefore the responsibility of everyone in the work place to learn and discern what ethical behavior is. Learning how to behave and treat others ethically is vital if an individual is to improve his or her productivity.
There are some areas where the ethics of an employee apply more than others. Some of the areas include meetings, communication, time management and employee safety practices. Communicating efficiently and appropriately to coworkers is one of the best ways in which to foster a good work environment. Being at work on time improves an individual’s personal image while at the same time showing respect for work. In dangerous work environment such as mining, how managers treat the safety of their employees is of uttermost importance to the health of the employees.
The above are just a few examples of how important practicing ethics in the work environment. Protecting the company’s assets from fraud and other activities is dependent on ethics. The company should also put measures to ensure that it has established the expected code of conduct in the work place. In this way, there will be no confusion regarding what is ethical and what is not. Among other reasons ethical behavior in the work place promotes efficiency and cordial behavior.
To solve the unethical issues that might occur in an office you can look at many different ethical theories, for this paper I will be focusing on the utilitarianism and Kantian deontological theories. The Utilitarianism approach focuses on the notion that an action or practice is correct when it produces more positive than negative consequences for the people who are involved (Chow, 2013). Kantian deontology takes a totally opposite approach to utilitarianism as it focuses on the fact that morality must adhere to a set of rules without any exceptions (Chow, 2013).
Feedback from what I turned in the topic was Ethics in the Workplace
Unfortunately, this submission largely misses the point of identifying a scenario from within the identified possible ‘unique ethical issues’ that will enable you to write a Final Project that will show case your knowledge of the ethical realm and the application of ethical theories to a specific ethical issue, which has spawned potentially multiple ethical dilemmas.
Although this topic is listed as one of the possible “unique ethical issues” – more work is required before you have a topic that will suit. This is way too broad. At present, it seems you raise the problem of unethical people in the workplace generally, and the question you would look at is “what do we do?”
How does this implicate a stateable ethical issue (beyond simple ethical wrong doing) and what dilemma is there besides how to deal with wrong-doers?
Please consider what is meant by ethical issue, and remember that the issues generally arise out of a conflict of values and/or interests. You might want to review the course material on ethical dilemmas to ensure that you understand how they arise. The dilemma will constitute a difficulty of choice between either two right choices, and/or sometimes what appears to be a forced choice between two wrong ones. The simple choice between doing good and doing evil is less a “dilemma” than it is simple ethical action. The dilemma is constituted by additional, complicating factors or the interests of different parties and groups. I do not recommend this broad a topic as your topic, as it will not enable you to research and present a successful Final Project.
