Alice Randall wrote a New York Times article in May 2012 about the cultural factors that encouraged black women to maintain a weight higher than what is considered healthy. Randall explained that many African-American communities and cultures consider overweight women to be more beautiful and desirable than women of a healthier weight, based on her observations and personal experience as a black woman. Many black women are fat because we want to be, she said (Randall, 2012).
Randall’s comments sparked a lot of debate and controversy, but they highlight an important fact in the healthcare field: different populations, cultures, and groups have different beliefs and practices that affect their health. Nurses and other healthcare providers should be aware of this reality and adjust their health assessment techniques and recommendations to account for it.
Consider the various socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors that should be considered when constructing a health history for patients from various backgrounds.

Consider your own nursing experiences as well as the information in this week’s Learning Resources about diversity issues in health assessments.
Consider the socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors that affect the health of the patient you’ve been assigned.
Consider how you’d go about compiling a patient’s medical history. What kinds of questions would you ask, and how would you phrase them to be sensitive to the patient’s history, lifestyle, and culture? Prepare five specific questions to ask the patient in order to learn about his or her medical history and assess his or her health risks.
Consider the difficulties that come with communicating with patients from a variety of backgrounds. What strategies can you use as a nurse to be sensitive to various cultural factors while gathering relevant data?
Post a 3- to 4-page explanation of the patient’s specific socioeconomic, spiritual, lifestyle, and other cultural factors.Explain why you should be sensitive to certain issues when interacting with the patient.
