Discussion of the international market in IBUS 211
Description
You’re an attorney (“in-house counsel”) for a company established in the United States that wants to expand internationally. Your business will operate in the country of your choice. As in-house counsel, it is your responsibility to assist the organization on legal matters, strategy, and risk management.
Instructions
Create your own business, product, or service (i.e. licensing intellectual property rights to use technology your company has created, or investing in a logging operation in Brazil for use of raw materials in your luxury boat company). Please see the samples below.
Determine the strategies your organization will employ to break into the worldwide market
Import/export trade
franchising/licensing (IPRs)
Joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, and totally owned subsidiaries are all examples of foreign direct investment.
You must use at least two techniques (i.e. trade and foreign direct investment; licensing and trade; franchising and foreign direct investment).Examples:
Brazil
You’re a luxury boat manufacturer based in the United States. Your company joins forces with a Brazilian corporation to establish a logging operation (foreign direct investment) in Brazil, which will be overseen by Americans and staffed by Brazilians. You import raw materials from Brazil for processing and production in the United States.
Germany
You’re a business based in the United States with a patented technology for creating personal space rockets. To build the rockets, your company licenses your intellectual rights to a facility in Germany. The rockets are then shipped back to the United States for usage.
