Course Project Requirements Assignment for Evaluation
Before you can create any public health program, you must first evaluate the community’s needs by conducting a needs assessment. The “most crucial step in the planning process” is the needs assessment (McKenzie et al., 2017, p. 68). This stage allows you to tailor your public health program to exactly what is required, rather than what someone might think would be beneficial.
This week, you’ll put together a community needs assessment. Interview two community members (in addition to yourself) for your needs assessment to determine the community’s “pulse,” what citizens see as necessary improvements, and the community’s actual requirements. Remember that you, too, are a member of the community, and that your qualitative observations and opinions as a public health/health studies student are valuable.
To get ready for this assignment, do the following:
Examine Chapter 4 of McKenzie et albook. .’s
Make a quick qualitative assessment of your community’s needs. Interview two residents of your community on the perceived public health needs using the questions provided below. Consider the obstacles to solving major public health challenges in your community and the resources available to help you overcome them:
How long have you been a resident of your neighborhood?
What do you believe are the most serious health issues in your town, and who do you believe are the people who are most affected by them?
What are two neighborhood hurdles that you believe could have a detrimental impact on these health issues (e.g., no public parks, pollution from a specific factory, lack of big hospitals or grocery stores)?
Why do you believe those obstacles exist? In your neighborhood, which Social Determinants of Health are primarily responsible for health problems? (For a list of examples, see the Healthy People 2030 Social Determinants of Health link in Learning Resources.)
What kinds of resources (hospitals, community clinics, non-profits, etc.) are available in your community that could influence the health of individuals in your town?
Consider the community resources available to assist in addressing the perceived public health challenges.
