Concepts And Fundamental Components Of Universal Design
Points: 100
Universal Design Project Overview
This two-part assignment requires you to study concepts and fundamental components of
universal design. You will utilize comprehensive checklists to observe and analyze early
childhood settings for evidence. You will specifically examine three areas: 1) environment
for learning, 2) curriculum and standards, and 3) support for language and literacy.
You will submit the completed observation documentation and a reflection paper that
includes: 1) summary of findings including strengths and improvement areas, 2) evidence
analysis, and 3) recommendations.
Classroom Observation
• On-site Observation/Visit: Prekindergarten or Kindergarten
You are expected to visit a classroom of your choice. You will need to schedule at
least two visits (approximately 2 to 3 hours total).
[You can visit centers such as a faith-based preschool, publicly funded or
employersponsored childcare center, a Head Start center, public school prekindergarten.
Other options are a family child care home, Montessori or Reggio Emilia programs,
multiple intelligences school, YMCA, university or college laboratory school, a large
chain (e.g., KinderCare, Goddard Schools, Bright Horizons, Stepping Stones, etc.),
and preschools in charter or magnet schools.]
• Alternative Option: Photographed Environment Evaluation — Approval
Required!
If you are not able to complete these observations in a live classroom, you must
obtain approval from your instructor before selecting the alternate option.
Using photographs provided in the course, you will analyze an early childhood
environment. You will utilize the “Environmental Photos for Universal Design
Project” found in Unit 4.
NAEYC Key Assessment
Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and application of the
following standards.
• Standard 1b. Knowing and understanding the multiple influences on development
and learning.
• Standard 3b: Knowing about and using observation, documentation, and other
appropriate assessment tools and approaches, including the use of technology in
documentation, assessment, and data collection.
• Standard 4a: Understanding positive relationships and supportive interactions as the
foundation of their work with children.
• Standard 4c: Using a broad repertoire of developmentally appropriate
teaching/learning approaches.
• Standard 5a: Understanding content knowledge and resources in academic disciplines.
• Standard 6c: Engaging in continuous, collaborative learning to inform practice; using
technology effectively with young children, with peers, and as a professional resource.
• Standard 6d: Integrating knowledgeable, reflective, and critical perspectives on early
education.
Project Requirements
You will work on this project in Units 4 and 6. You will conduct eight observations utilizing
textbook assigned readings, checklists and examples.
Complete and submit the Universal Design Assessment
This one document contains sections for all checklists, analyses, overall reflection and
recommendations.
Unit What You Will Do
Unit 4 Complete:
Observation, Documentation and Analysis
1. Indoor and Outdoor Safety Checklist
2. Learning Environment Checklist
3. Science Environment Checklist
4. Engineering and Construction Checklist
5. Mathematics Environment Checklist
Unit 6 Complete:

Submit:
Universal Design Assessment
*Environmental Checklists, Analysis, Reflection and Recommendations
Instructions:
1. Review the course materials on universal design. Familiarize yourself with the
“Universal Design Checklists and Overall Assessment Template” provided in the Unit. You
will complete and submit this template in two parts (Units 4 and 6).
2. Conduct Observation and Record Documentation (Units 4 – 6)
NAEYC Standard 3b
A. Using the textbook (see chapters for each topic), select 10 checklists to analyze
the environment according to the categories below.
B. Utilize the checklists to observe and record specific evidence of:
• Indoor and Outdoor Safety Checklist (pages 77 & 78) — Due in U4
• Learning Environment Checklist (pages 81 and 82) — Due in U4
• Science Environment Checklist (page 237) — Due in U4
• Engineering and Construction Environment Checklist (page 321) — Due in U4
• Mathematics Environment Checklist (page 271) — Due in U4
• Social Studies/Dramatic Play Checklist (page 182) — Due in U6
• Art Environment Checklist (page 144) — Due in U6
• Music Environment Checklist (page 148) — Due in U6
C. You must observe and document 10 areas per checklist.
D. Your documentation must include:
i. Onsite, Live Observations: dates and times of observations
— Or —
Environmental Photos: page numbers
ii. Evidence statements for live observations or environmental photos
Write specifically and objectively: a) what you see, b) what is present in the
environment (materials, equipment such as technology, furnishings),
c) representation of diversity, d) support for children with special needs,
e) supportive interactions between adults and children, etc.
Analysis and Reflection
Imagine you are the teacher and this is your classroom. You have used this tool to
conduct a self-assessment of your environment. Now, you will examine this classroom to
ensure universal design. What are the strengths, challenges and needs? What changes
would you make?
Reflect on the entire project. Review all checklists. Demonstrate, in explicit terms, new
knowledge you have gained about universal design from observation, data collection and
documentation, and analysis.
3. Conduct Analysis (located on checklist): Due Unit 6
NAEYC Standard 5a
For each checklist area observed, you will need to write a paragraph addressing:
A. Areas of strength observed and rationale for this determination
B. Challenges and rationale for this determination
C. Areas needing improvement and rationale for this determination
4. Conduct Reflection (located on the checklist): Due Unit 6
NAEYC Standard 1b
A. Explain how this observation, documentation, and assessment exercise has
increased your understanding of the importance of universal design.
B. What new and/or enhanced knowledge have you gained regarding the multiple
influences on children’s development and learning?
NAEYC Standard 4a
C. Were there examples of how positive relationships and supportive interactions are
the foundation for ALL children’s learning and optimal development? If so, provide
at least 2 examples. If not, share at least 2 opportunities.
D. Were there examples of environments supporting diversity? If so, provide at least 2
examples. If not, share at least 2 opportunities to support diversity.
E. Were examples of environments supporting children with special needs evident? If
so, provide 2 examples. If not, provide 2 opportunities.
NAEYC Standard 4c
Developmentally Appropriate Practices:
F. Were developmentally appropriate practices (DAP) considered in the creation of the
environmental areas? Address why or why not.
G. Are the environments established to support appropriate activities for the age
group? Provide 2 examples.
NAEYC Standard 6c
H. Evaluate the appropriateness and effectiveness of planned, observed, and
documented (checklist) environments and the impact on teaching practices and
learning opportunities.
I. Describe 2 opportunities to improve the effective use of technology with young
children.
5. Identify Recommendations
NAEYC Standard 6d
Make at least 5 recommendations based on universal design components and
characteristics. Demonstrate direct alignment with evidence statements and include the
checklists.
Be sure to read the criteria below by which your work will be evaluated before you
write and again after you write.
Note: Submission includes complete checklists, analyses, reflection and
recommendations as detailed above.
