BISM7202 – Information Systems for Management
Type: Individual Report Learning Objectives Assessed: 1, 2 Due Date: 2:00pm, 9 April 2020 Deliverable: A Written Assignment submitted via TurnItIn Weight: 20%
Task Description
The essay is 1200 to 1500 words in length. The assignment is worth 20 marks that equates to 20% of the overall grade achievable in this course. The assignment MUST be done individually. This is NOT a collaborative assignment.
Please be aware of the University’s Statute regarding academic integrity, plagiarism and the submission of your own work.
Please note you can resubmit your assignment as many times as you like prior to the deadline. We will only mark the latest version of the assignment submitted up until the due date.
However, TurnItIn’s similarity reports will take more time (several hours) to be made available after the first submission – this is how TurnItIn works.
Requirements
You are required to write a brief essay of 1200-1500 words. The broad topic of this essay is “Business Analytics and Privacy”. This is an individual assessment item – group work or any collaboration on the written component is not permitted. You can and should discuss the assignment at a high level with your peers, but the work needs to be your own.
With the introduction of privacy regulations such as the California Consumer Privacy Act and the EU General Data Protection Regulation, and amendments to the Australian Privacy Act, effective data protection and ensuring data privacy is a paramount concern for organisations that perform business analytics.
Ignoring data privacy can lead to adverse outcomes for organisations. In July 2018, hackers accessed 1.5 million health records in Singapore’s online health system – including the health records of the Prime Minister. This incident was just one of the latest high-profile healthcare data breaches. A full list includes the infamous theft of 78.8 million patient records from Anthem Blue Cross, a US- based health insurance plan provider, and the online sale of Australian Medicare card details on a darknet auction site. Moreover, businesses face potential penalties if they violate data protection principles. In July 2019, British Airways faced a €215 Million fine over a security breach that compromised personal data of roughly 500,000 customers.
You are required to research and write an individual essay that describes and defines Business Analytics (BA) and Privacy (or Data Privacy), and analyses the relationships between BA and data privacy (e.g., impacts of BA on Data Privacy, or Data Privacy concerns when conducting BA). The essay should then discuss several privacy-related implications of BA for contemporary organisations. Finally, the essay should set out your own personal reflection upon the implications of BA and data privacy for your career or life in society (social role).
In your essay:
BISM7202 – Information Systems for Management
- Define and describe business analytics (you can focus on one application, such as video analytics, Internet of Things (IoT) analytics, customer profiling, etc.) in organisations.
- Define and describe data privacy.
- Analyse the role of data privacy in business analytics activities.
- Evaluate at least two data privacy-related implications for contemporary organisations when using business analytics.
- Reflect upon the potential for data privacy issues to affect your possible future career or your life as a citizen (social role), and what you might need to do as a consequence.
The essay should have an abstract, an introduction, a body, and a conclusion. The introduction should be short and identify the purpose, scope, and structure of the essay. The conclusion should be short and summarize the points you have made in your essay and what is interesting about them.
You are to refer to external, independent, academic sources (for example, peer -reviewed journal articles) to support your observations. These sources are to be cited using one of the approved referencing styles.
Given its reflective nature, you may choose to write this essay in the first person.
Guidelines
Expectations
Please read the following expectations carefully.
Word limit: 1200-1500 words If you stay under or go over the word limit, you can ONLY get 8/20 marks as set out on the last row in the marking rubric (see below regarding what is included in the Word Count). Weighting: 20% Due Date: Submit by 2:00pm on 9 April 2020. Scope: There are five main aspects of your essay: Introduction, Background, Business Analytics (BA) and Data Privacy, Privacy Implications for Organisations and My Career (or Social Role), and Conclusion. You may use headings in your essay to clearly identify each aspect, or you may use a well-structured essay that is coherent and has paragraphs that link to each other. Your headings, if used, do NOT need to be exactly as set out above. Abstract: An abstract is a brief summary of the overall essay, and a reader uses an abstract to quickly ascertain the purpose of the paper. The abstract should cover the whole paper and should set out the purpose of the paper, what you did, and the conclusion. An abstract is different to the introduction in that an introduction provides the rationale for the paper and is a forward-looking statement as to what you intend to achieve in the paper. In contrast, the abstract reports what was achieved. Its key goal is to help the reader assess whether they wish to read the essay. Note that an introduction supports its statements with citations whereas an abstract does not. An abstract also differs from an executive summary in that an executive summary is intended to communicate the key points of a document. An executive summary is usually used for a report rather than an essay. The key goal for an executive summary is that the executive can read the executive summary and act on it without reading the whole report. The report is provided for detail if the executive audience requires it.

Introduction: In your opening introduction, briefly introduce the topic, the purpose and motivation for your essay, and provide ‘signposting’ for the remainder of the essay. Definitions and other statements should be supported with citations from the current academic literature, not a webpage. Background: Define and describe BA and Data Privacy. Discuss why these two concepts are important, related, topics. Support your definition, description, and discussion with citations from the current Information Systems academic literature and examples from either academic literature or industry publications. Data Privacy and You should then analyse the role of Data Privacy in Business Analytics Business activities. That is, how Data Privacy is related to Business Analytics. Analytics Support your definition, description, and discussion with citations from the current Information Systems academic literature and examples from industry publications. Implications for Implications for Organisations Organisations Considering contemporary organisations, identify and evaluate at least two and My Career (or privacy-related implications arising from the use BA. That is, identify two ways Social Role) in which the use of BA affects organisations and their customers and evaluate each implication. The best essays will consider strategic implications rather than transactional implications and will evaluate these implications according to defined criteria (for example, you might evaluate the implications according to a SWOT – Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities or threats – analysis). Support your discussion with relevant citations from current academic literature. You should use examples from academic literature or industry publications to support your discussion. Implications for My Career You should then EITHER identify your current preferred career (e.g. accounting, information systems, finance, marketing, human resources, etc), OR social role (e.g., citizen, customer, activist, potential patient, etc.) and reflect upon how data privacy issues in BA might affect your future career (or social role). Discuss several implications and identify several actions you should take as a result. Support your discussion with relevant citations from the current academic or industry publications. Conclusion: In the conclusion to your essay, summarise the insights you identified in the essay and highlight the most important and interesting conclusions you made.

References: • In your essay be sure to cite a range of different sources from the academic literature that are quality sources identified from your own independent research activities and that are relevant to your essay. • Use the approved referencing styles APA 6th, Vancouver style, or Harvard Referencing to cite your sources. The UQ Library provides “How To” guides for writing that you can use. • Quality: Given the cross-disciplinary nature of this topic, your essay should cite a minimum of 8 academic papers from journals ranked B, A or A* at the Australian Business Deans Council List (see http://www.abdc.edu.au/master-journal-list.php) that you have found through your own independent research. Sources provided in the electronic course profile do not count as a source identified from your own research activity. Refer to the ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ for more information regarding independent research. • Relevant: The cited source must clearly support the points made. • You may also cite industry publications (e.g. InTheBlack from CPA Australia) but these are in addition to the 8 academic papers needed. • As a guide, it is likely that you will need to cite at most 16 papers in your essay (including both academic literature and industry publications). • For conference papers, see http://aisnet.org/page/Conferences • Be sure to include quotation marks when quoting statements directly from another author; also include the page or line number for any direct quotes as required by the referencing style. • You can submit your work multiple times prior to submission in order to obtain a Turnitin report to confirm there is no accidental plagiarism.

Formatting and professionalism
The essay is to be written to a professional standard. This requires a formal writing style – do not use dot points – and adopt a professional tone. Given the essay’s reflective nature, you may choose to write this essay in the first person.
The essay must be consistent with the University’s policies on academic integrity, plagiarism, and consequences as noted below.
The essay should be typed (in Times Roman 12-point font or larger, single-spaced) and the Word Count should be in the range of 1,200 to 1,500 words in total length.
The Word Count excludes the title page, abstract, tables, footnotes and references. The word limit must be observed or the assessment will be affected as noted in the Rubric.
No appendices are to be provided. Tables in the essay should not exceed one page.
The following referencing styles are approved for this essay:
- APA 6th
- Vancouver
You must be consistent with the reference style, and include, for journal papers, details such as the author, title, journal name, volume, number, and number of pages. For all other sources, provide as much as information (conference dates and location) as possible. You are to provide a written list of sources referred to in your essay after the conclusion under the heading “References” or “Bibliography” as required by the referencing style.
The UQ Library provides “How To” guides for writing and referencing that you can use.
You must include a title page (you may select your own title) with identifying details including the following: student number, full name, date, title, selected referencing style, and word count. Omitting these details will affect your assessment.
Submission
To be done through Blackboard Assignment Submission and TurnItIn as indicated in Learn.UQ.
Acceptable submission formats are Microsoft Word and PDF formats. The files MUST be named in the format of BISM7202_StudentLastName_StudentID.pdf (or a. docx or .doc extension). If your ID is 41724943 and your surname is Wu, the name of your files would be BISM7202_Wu_41724943.pdf. The written assignment file should not be zipped.
Plagiarism
It is understandable that students talk with each other regularly, and discuss problems and potential solutions. However, it is expected that the submitted assignment is a unique document – all parts of the assignment are to be completed solely by the individual student.
In cases where an assignment is perceived to not be a unique work, a loss of marks and other implications can result.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is independent research required, and, umm, what is it?
For this assessment, demonstrable independent research from quality peer-reviewed academic literature is required. Given the scope of the essay, it is expected that at least eight academic, quality, peer-reviewed sources supporting the discussion will be provided that the student has found through their own independent research activities.
Academic, peer-reviewed sources provided as required reading material in the course do not demonstrate independent research. Industry publications (e.g. trade magazines such as CPA Australia’s InTheBlack or Forbes Magazine) are not academic peer-reviewed sources, but can be used as sources for examples. Lecture notes are secondary sources; they should not be cited. A reference list should be included at the end of the essay that is consistent with the citation style identified on the cover page.
Usually, research should be restricted to publications within the last ten (10) years or so. However, key foundational works (i.e. initial, important, and highly-cited papers) are an exception to this rule and can be considered ‘current’ as they are often cited in the current literature.
For simplicity and clarity, ‘quality peer-reviewed research’ includes papers from journals listed on the Australian Business Deans Council List: http://www.abdc.edu.au/master-journal-list.php however prominent scientific journals such as Nature or Science also meet this criteria.
IS Domain sources should be accessed in discussing Business Analytics and Privacy; such sources are from the 0806 ‘Field of Research’ journals identified on the Australian Business Deans Council List http://www.abdc.edu.au/master-journal-list.php
For simplicity and clarity, industry publications are publications you would find on a popular website (such as www.news.com.au) or for sale in a newsagency.
There is a video in Learn.UQ on how to use the ABDC list and on how to find research references for a University Essay.
- How tight are the word limits?
Concise and pithy discussion in business communication is highly valued, and you must develop your skills in this area. If you stay under or go over the word limit, you can ONLY get a maximum of 8/20 marks based on the marking rubric. The word count does not include the abstract, appendices, figures/diagrams, tables or references.
- What goes on the cover page again?
On the cover/title page note the essay title, your student number, name, the course code and course title, the date, the word count (excluding Cover Page, Abstract, Figures/Diagrams/Tables, Appendices and References) and the reference citation style.
