TASK
In class, you have been studying the HSC Common Module Texts and Human Experiences with a focus on the prescribed text Billy Elliot and a range of other related texts. You will be required to present a 5-6 minute speech. Your presentation will be on ONE of the topics below:
How do your chosen texts affirm or challenge this statement?
Evaluate this statement in light of your prescribed and related text.
To what extent do you agree with this statement?
Your presentation will focus on Stephen Daldry’s film Billy Elliot as well as ONE other text of your own choosing. You will create a visual presentation on a PowerPoint or Google slides to be displayed during your presentation. Your visual aid should relate to the content of your speech.
You are required to submit a written transcript of your speech accompanied by your visual component on the due date to the Year 12 English Studies Google Classroom page (Class Code: h22wly7). You must record your presentation and submit.
During your speech, you will need to refer to specific examples, ideas and techniques used in both the prescribed text and your chosen related material. You should structure your speech using an Introduction, at least TWO Body paragraphs and a Conclusion. Use the questions below as a guide to help develop and organize your content:
o What are some of the experiences and ideas that Stephen Daldry presents in his film Billy Elliot? o What 2 or 3 scenes in the film best show these experiences or ideas? o How does Stephen Daldry use film techniques (i.e. camera, sound, mise-en-scene and editing) in these scenes to communicate these ideas to the audience? o What are some of the experiences and ideas in your related text? Are they similar or different to those in Billy Elliot? o How does the composer of your related text use the techniques of their text type to communicate these ideas?
– You MUST discuss your chosen topic in relation to your prescribed text and ONE related text of your own choosing. You MUST NOT use any of the shorter texts previously covered in your lessons or texts you have studied in Year 11. If you are note sure about your text, please check with your class teacher. – Your presentation MUST be in the form of a speech of 6-8minutes accompanied by a visual presentation in a presentation format of your choice. – Your presentation MUST be recorded and you MUST appear in the recording for at least 50% of the presentation time.
EXTRA NOTES: This is an oral and visual presentation, so you should: – Be aware of your purpose and audience – do not read an essay. Think about how you can engage your audience throughout your speech. – Prepare well in advance, practice your speech so that you are making eye-contact, vary the pitch and tone of your voice and be within the time limits. You should use palm cards. – Create a visual presentation that complements and enhances your ideas – DO NOT duplicate ANY part of your speech on your slides. You should include only images and textual evidence. – Your recording should be no longer than 6 minutes
