Since the midterm paper we have reviewed the following theorists and their associated works:

Max Weber, “The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism,” and “Bureaucracy”
Pierre Bourdieu, “The Forms of Capital”
Michel Foucault, “Discipline and Punish”
Margaret Mead, “Introduction to Coming of Age in Samoa”
P.H. Collins, “Black Feminist Thought”
Through our exploration of the work outlined above, we have reviewed many themes, including the following:
1) capital
2) power
3) race
4) gender
5) material culture
6) ethnography, or ethnographic methodology
This paper is composed of 3 parts: A, B, and C
- For this paper, you will choose 2 themes above to discuss. For each theme you choose, you will discuss how 2 theorists of your choice explain or approach the theme. For example, state how you think each theorist explains how each theme impacts human lives and societies. Refer to the specific pieces and ideas written by the theorists you choose. You may discuss the same theorist under more than one theme. Be sure to explain why you chose each theorist under each theme. What follows is an example of what you might choose to discuss in response to this part of the exam. This is just an example. You do not have to choose these themes or theorists.

In addition to stating each theorist’s approach to or position on the themes you choose, you will also need to:
- Compare and contrast the theorists’ ideas within each theme you discuss. For example, to go along with the model I provide above, discuss what you think are similarities and differences between the work of Margaret Mead and P.H. Collins under Theme 1, which is gender. Compare and contrast the theorists for Theme 2.
- All the theory work listed on page 1 of this document is based in part on data collection obtained through ethnography, observations, and interviews conducted by the researchers. So we can understand that these theories are based, to certain extents, on real-world conditions and experiences. How do you see one theoretical approach for each theme you chose playing out in your own life experiences, and why?
For example, how do you see P.H. Collins’s understanding of “intersectionality,” and Michel Foucault’s ideas about discipline and punishment impacting your lives or the lives of those around you? Pick examples from your own observations and experiences to discuss. You might want to share something about social interactions, and/or aspects of your hometown, college campus, nation, work life, home life, economy, government, religion, healthcare system, criminal justice system, COVID-19 experiences, or something else of your choice, such as an interest, skill, or hobby of yours.
How to structure your assignment:
You can choose to structure your responses to all the questions above in the form of a comprehensive paper, but you don’t have to. Instead, you can follow the outline below:
