This source showcases the importance of African American Vernacular Traditions in the identity of the African Americans and in particular realigning with their culture. Morrison expresses folktales in the form of myths such as the myth of flight. She expresses how the presence of stories help in preservation of family history and sustenance of identity. Blacks being victims of slavery find strength in their culture and self-identity that is different from the Whites. Having distinct vernacular traditions helps the African Americans assert their independence and preserve their cultural identity. Solomons songs expressed as a rhyme is seen to provide Milkman with divine guidance freeing him from mental bondage and acquiring spiritual freedom. This clearly correlates with how songs were used to communicate during the slavery days. For example, the song Wade in the water and Steal Away were used as signals to guide escaped slaves on way to freedom. For Milkman, the songs had secrets which held the path back to his people. There is also depiction on how the characters manipulate their languages and use dozens to adjust to realities. For example, Pilate uses puns, folk sayings, riddles, and proverbs to disguise her reality. Lastly, to keep the culture alive, the links to the ancestors who are custodians of the traditions have to be maintained.

This sources seeks to showcase how Toni Morrison reconstructs societal gender perceptions and specifically showcasing the great potential possessed by women in her book Songs of Solomon. Most of Milkmans guides are black women. The source analyzes how women are portrayed as the key guides of Milkman Dead in his journey. Morrison gives the female characters in the book biblical identities while employing inversion, revision, and irony. This include Rebecca, Mary Magdalene, Ruth, 1st Corinthians, Pontius Pilate, and Hagar. In a way, she exposes the sexism in some of the stories and the chauvinism expressed by Milkman. Under the story of Rebecca in Old Testament, Morrison constructs Reba as a character who does not wish to be possessed or to possess. This is in contrast to the biblical story of Rebecca who was chosen by Abraham to marry his son and maintain the family line. Morrisons Reba on the other hand refuses to marry, she is not a virgin, and does not preserve her maternal or paternal line. She is untethered to a man and she is also financially free. She keeps only a ring that she wins from Sears symbolizing her autonomy. This source also analyzing Morrison portray of perils associated with being attached or dependent on another person through Rebas daughter Hagar. In their first encounter, Milkman falls in love with Hagar and sees her as his equal. The two enjoy their attachment together for twelve years. However, as Hagar becomes more attached to Milkman, he starts to think less of him. This is clearly showcased when ending Milkman ends their relationship. He treats Hagar like a prostitute giving her money and writing to her a small note. Hagar, not used to being independent, is not able to recover from the end of their association and eventually dies of despair. In the naming of First Corinthians and Mary Magdalene, in her case called Lena, are a symbolic critique of how female empowerment and sexuality is downplayed in the two contexts according to the source. In Paul letter to Corinthians women submissiveness and silence is encouraged which Morrison depiction of First Corinthians opposes. Lena and First Corinthians are depicted as the embodiment of authority, sexuality, and female voice.References
