1. Describe a white paper that could be written for an external audience. Keep in mind that you will not be writing to an audience for an organization of which you are a member if you are writing a white paper for an external audience. To put it another way, you wouldn’t write a white paper to your supervisor on the need to fix a problem at work. Because you are a company employee, that would be an internal white paper.
You wouldn’t submit a white paper to your son’s soccer league’s board of directors on the need to solve a problem on the fields. Because you are a member of the soccer league, that would be an internal white paper.
You may, however, produce a white paper for other businesses about a product or service that your firm sells or provides.
You may also send a white paper to soccer leagues around the country concerning field issues.
Let’s look at the case of Susan, for example. She works for a firm that has pioneered a novel approach to IT training. She may produce a white paper for IT departments in businesses. The white paper might compare and contrast current techniques of training IT professionals with the innovative method developed by her organization.
Susan is unfamiliar with the persons who will read her white paper, does not work for these companies, and is not involved in these companies, so this is an example of an external audience.
We can also look at the case of a man named Joseph. He works for a corporation that had a negative experience with cloud data migration. He may publish a white paper for businesses thinking about shifting their data to the cloud. The white paper would go over the current reasons why businesses are considering migrating to the cloud, as well as the hazards that Joe believes businesses should be aware of.
This is an example of an external audience, because Joseph is unfamiliar with the people who will read his white paper, does not work for the companies that would benefit from it, and is not otherwise connected to these businesses.
2. Describe any terminology or concepts that you might need to describe or explain for a white paper of the type you mentioned in assignment #1. A white paper that warns about the dangers of shifting to the cloud, for example, will need to clarify cloud terminology for its readers. A white paper describing a new technique of training IT professionals will need to explain some words that are already used in IT.
