Introduction and objectives
This paper focuses on addressing domestic violence as one of the prevailing social problems affecting families. In domestic violence, one adult in a relationship abuses their power to control another. Violence and other forms of abuse are used to establish power and fear in a relationship. Assaults can be physical or psychological; social and financial abuse can also be involved. Violence might occur intermittently, on a regular basis, or for no apparent reason at all. An argument about domestic violence isn’t enough. One individual exerts a pattern of coercive control on another. Violence, threats, insults, and economic deprivation are some of the tactics used by abusers to exert their authority over their victims (KAMALOVNA et al, 2020). Violence in the home has a significant impact on the economy and the development of a nation in a subtle, but significant, manner. In terms of law enforcement, health care, lost productivity, and overall development, domestic violence is a huge drain on the nation’s resources. Reverberations from an assault on another person’s family and community can have long-term consequences for generations to come.
In attaining the goal of the paper, a discussion is raised analyzing an organization focused at advocating the rights of such families and victims. Safety For Us is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting families in need, such as those who have been victims of domestic violence. Domestic Violence Advocacy has been taken by the group in order to raise awareness about domestic violence and its impact on families and the community. One of the plan’s objectives is to aid families affected by sexual assault; legal and counseling assistance is provided to help mothers and their children feel safer. Furthermore, the program’s provision of counseling and other mental health services to victims of domestic violence and their children is extremely beneficial in minimizing the psychological repercussions of the abuse. The effort will also focus on minimizing family violence through legal aid, psychotherapy, and other psychiatric treatments for families.
Statement of the problem and connection to family advocacy and policy
There is increased prevalence in domestic violence as evident in the increased number of cases reported. This affects various members of the families as it cuts across both genders: women, men as well as children in the families. One in every three women and one in every four males in the United States is a victim of rape, physical assault, or stalking by an intimate relationship (Reznikova & Bakina, 2020). Only one in every ten high school students has been subjected to physical abuse in the previous year. Every minute, an average of 24 people in the United States are raped, physically abused, or stalked by an intimate partner, culminating in more than 12 million women and men being victimized in a single year.
According to the survey, rape, physical violence, or stalking by a spouse had a detrimental influence on the functioning of nearly one-third of American women, or 29 percent, and one-tenth, or 10 percent, of American men. Intimate partner abuse, defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner, affects around 15 percent of women and 4 percent of men in the United States. Domestic violence has taken away families’ capacity to create a quiet, comfortable, and safe environment for their children to learn and thrive. Domestic violence has an immediate and long-term impact on children (Sharma & Borah, 2020). Children’s reactions to domestic violence in their homes may vary, but the ramifications of domestic abuse will undoubtedly be felt by each and every child. Many people face emotional and behavioral stress as a result of domestic violence, as well as the threat of physical injury (McPhedran et al, 2017).
With the high statistics as shown in the research statistics provided, it is a reflection of the significant adverse impact on the health of the families and the children. Victims of any kind of violence or abuse face substantial health implications. Chronic pain, higher risk of stroke, heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, cancer, or gynecological difficulties are just a few of the health consequences. Depression, alcohol and drug misuse, and high-risk sexual practices are all examples of behavioral health issues. It is also associated with workplace absenteeism, which can lead to social and financial isolation, as well as additional health hazards for the victim’s family members.
Plan
The awareness creation activity will be conducted through a series of steps which will be followed systematically. The first step in the process is choosing the topic and the goals. In this case, the goal will be aligned to the objectives outlined in the advocacy plan. A detailed procedure to be followed in meeting the goals will be prepared to ensure the parties and stakeholders follow the plan even without immediate supervision. In ensuring the goals are effective enough, they will be evaluated on the basis of SMART technique. This is to ensure the awareness plan attains the ultimate goal of advocating against domestic violence (Mattson et al, 2018).
The second phase in lobbying or awareness is to locate the resources required to support the plan. This will entail establishing a budget that will be used to carry out the campaign. Support from the community is one of the resources required by the organization to carry out the campaign. Before launching the campaign on the target audience, individuals of the community and leaders must be approached. Another resource required in carrying out the awareness campaign is time. This is due to the requirement to guarantee that the awareness is carried out at the most appropriate time. Promotional materials, which are utilized to raise awareness, are another crucial resource to consider. In order to increase people’s interest in an event, promotional materials are routinely used. These promotional materials are crucial to every campaign since they provide the recipient with information and education about the subject. There are two ways to locate marketing and promotional materials: In-depth information on a topic gathered from a larger source and disseminated to the local community, in this case domestic abuse. Marketing brochures that highlight facts and information about the topic and your region. Other events on the subject may take place in other parts of the community as well. Keep in mind that marketing materials should appeal to the visual and tactile interests of the target audience as much as anything else. When it comes to raising awareness about a problem and arranging events, the more resources one has, the more alternatives one has (Subramani et al, 2019). These resources must be addressed before moving on to any other aspect of the campaign.
The third step in creating awareness on the issue is segmenting the audience which involves classifying the identified target population into different classes. This will be conducted based on the research statistics which show domestic violence affects women, men, young adults as well as school children. There is a need to ensure the topics discussed are tailored to the specific audience in enhancing effectiveness of the topics in controlling and reducing domestic violence. Each of the segmented audience will have distinct topics to be discussed in the sessions.
The fourth step in the awareness program is creation of a schedule of activities, programs and initiatives. The main driving force is to ensure the awareness program is efficient. In attaining this, the program will use both active and passive awareness programs. To be termed “active,” attendees must actively participate in order for the event to be recognized such. It is necessary for members of the community to participate in these activities. However, they will require more time and effort from the staff, volunteers, and partners to plan and implement because they will have a greater potential impact. It takes less work to have a passive event than it does to have an active one. A few instances of this are the sharing and dissemination of information, as well as promoting awareness. Passive because reading promotional material does not require much effort and members of the community can do it whenever they want without feeling obligated (Goodmark, 2018).
Safety for Us Message
In the message of the organization, the violent parent can be counseled about the repercussions of their actions and alternate means of dealing with household issues that do not include hostility, such as mediation. This is a crucial part of the campaign to reduce marital abuse in the community and to raise awareness of the issue. Sexual assault rates can be reduced by educating the public about the negative effects of domestic abuse. Trauma victims’ children benefit from strong connections with the accused’s traumatized spouse. Several studies have found that children who grow up in homes where abuse occurs are more likely to become violent adults.
Target audience, stakeholders, supporters and opponents
It is the mission of the Safety For Us group to protect people from a variety of family structures across the globe. Families with married men and women and their families are the primary goals. Community people and county administrators as well as police are involved in this advocacy effort.
The government can play a vital role in protecting and assisting victims of sexual abuse to improve their security and the safety of their children in partnership with other stakeholders. Legislation to protect parents and children from domestic and family violence should be developed and implemented by the government. Domestic abusers, for example, should suffer severe legal penalties to help reduce the number of such occurrences. Legislation should also include methods and advice to help victims flee abusive situations, which will help both the victim and the child’s safety. Those who don’t appreciate the importance of a happy family are the most vocal critics of efforts to combat domestic violence. Advocates for families touched by domestic violence have enormous challenges, including victims who remain in violent relationships and a lack of proper legal processes and standards to protect survivors of domestic abuse. Victims of abuse are not given enough legal authority to quit abusive situations, taking into account the reasons why people are reluctant to break up with poisonous friendships. The fact that spousal violence victims’ families aren’t considered disadvantaged by law or society is also unsubstantiated.
