GE4023 Tellus II Physical Geography Assignment
Module 1 Quaternary Geology, part 3: Quaternary deposits
In this practical exercise, the student is given the task to interpret a map of Quaternary deposits in order to draw a cross-cutting strati-graphical profile. The student must use knowledge gained from the course material and literature to draw the stratigraphy of the various layers that are expected to be present and describe them with a chronological perspective, showing understanding of the landscape development in the mapped area.
Instructions
Study the map shown in Fig. 1 below and draw a cross-cutting stratigraphical profile that corresponds to the black transect line that stretches from point A in the west to point B in the east. The profile should depict the Quaternary deposits that are expected to be present from the top layers shown in the map to the bedrock somewhere below, including several that may not be visible from above! The deposits must be drawn in the correct vertical order and should be drawn so that they resemble their natural appearances. To fit all of the layers in the stratigraphy, you should exaggerate the vertical scale in your drawing.
To interpret the map, refer to the legend shown in Fig. 2 (next page). Use the same colours as in the legend for your drawing. Some simplifications are recommended: for example, red can be used for all bedrock and orange for all postglacial sand and gravel.
To accompany the profile, write a description of the landscape development from the deglaciation of the area until today. Do this by briefly describing each Quaternary deposit found in the profile and their respective formation processes, keeping in mind the order of events to present a correct chronological perspective. To interpret this landscape correctly, it helps to know that the mapped area is located in Uppland, eastern central Sweden.
