Description/Paper Instructions
Hepatic abscess (HA) is an encapsulated collection of suppurative material inside the liver parenchyma that can be infected by bacterial, fungal, or parasitic microbes. The majority of HAs in the Western world are infected with bacteria, hence this review will focus on pyogenic liver abscess.
Pylephlebitis secondary to appendicitis was the most common cause of HA in the early 1900s. Biliary tract disease became the most common cause of HA in the late 1900s, and it is still the most common cause today. More recently, the incidence of HA associated with malignancies and their treatment has increased, including HA from liver metastasis and as a consequence of transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) or radiofrequency ablation (RFA).
So, in not less than two pages, explain what the complications of a liver abscess are based on this excerpt.
