Week 8: Apply Your Insights to Your Doctoral Study
In the final analysis, innovation creates leverage. The strategies, frameworks, tools, and approaches for optimizing and sustaining innovation capabilities you have reviewed in this course have provided you with a powerful toolkit for leveraging your and your organization’s innovation potential. But the question remains: What will you achieve with the power to leverage your business’s potential? How will the knowledge you have accessed in this course allow you to make a difference, and what kind of difference will you make?
This week, you will reflect on the body of knowledge you have acquired over the last 7 weeks, and you will synthesize the key themes and concepts. Focus on the course literature’s implications for future directions in the field and on the ways in which actively reviewing and critiquing research has sharpened your own skills as a researcher.
Learning Objectives
Independent scholars will:
Assess relationship of innovation management literature to personal doctoral research in order to further refine research questions
Integrate new ways of thinking identified in or assimilated from the seminar experience into personal approach to research
Learning Resources
Required Readings
There are no additional resources this week. Focus on synthesizing and reflecting upon the previous weeks’ literature.
Discussion: Seminar Reflection Discussion
To prepare for this Discussion, reflect on the research you have reviewed, the presentations you have made and evaluated, and the Discussions in which you have engaged over the last 7 weeks of this course.
By Day 3
Post an assessment of the seminar content and evaluation of the research design. Your assessment should address the following:

Consider the articles you have read and evaluate how the methods of data collection, research statistics employed, and overall research designs have enlightened your individual approach to research. Is there anything about your approach to your individual research that the literature in this seminar has reinforced or confirmed?
Were you exposed to any new sources of data that will be useful in your Doctoral Study? Be specific in your answer.
How do you view yourself as a global change agent in light of the topics covered in this seminar course?

How does the research and content presented in this course inform or relate to your individual Doctoral Study? What research methods or strategic analysis approaches might be useful in answering the questions that you have posted?
Having reached this far in my Doctoral Study, information gathered from previous courses have broadened the scope of knowledge to take on the challenges of the seminar course on Innovation Management. According to Moschis (2019), academic research can be considered more art than science, and views on academic research tend to differ and are based primarily on personal experiences. I am proposing to explore strategies to ensure profitability in the automotive industry.
I will be focusing on the seminal work of Smith (1956) segmentation, targeting and positioning (STP) model. The purpose of the STP model is to suggest a tool to understand the attributes of various segments in the market to develop the marketing strategy. I will use a qualitative multiple case study to research the topic “Successful Marketing Strategies in Grenada Automotive Dealership Operations.” The conceptual framework can be used to organize existing research and identify gaps in knowledge (Moschis, 2019). The content in this Innovation Management course has broadened the scope of knowledge needed to be innovative and apply entrepreneurship skills.
Evaluate how the methods of data collection, research statistics employed and overall research design have enlightened your individual approach to research. Is there anything in the literature that reinforced or confirmed your individual research?
Saunders et al. (2015) suggest that ethics are critical aspects of business and management research involving human participants. With the qualitative method, the researcher needs to think, how to access the necessary data without causing any problem or ethical concerns. To gain access to the participants, I will use a non-standardized form of interview one to one, and approach the individual informing of the course of study I am embarking upon and request if I can use them a participants for my research topic. The target participants for the research are mangers and Chief Executive officers of the auto dealership, who have successfully positioned themselves to adapt marketing strategies which ensure profitability to sustain the business. A request letter will follow outlining proposed question I will like the answer when conducting the interview (Yin, 2018).
Hogenhuis et al. (2016) suggest that semistructured one-hour interviews can be conducted with representatives from the firms involved in the project. The interviewees were managers in the field of open management, innovation management, marketing and supply chain firms and Chief Executive Officers of large firms. The article, “when should large firms collaborate with young ventures? “ in this seminar confirms the approach I will use to obtain the relative data for my doctoral study.
Were you exposed to any new sources of data that will be useful in your Doctoral Study?
During the course on innovation management, I had the privilege of gaining new insight on several topics, but the one that stood out is the topic of “Tools for open innovation.” The author discussed that open innovation could be linked to dynamic capabilities as it seeks to better understand strategic management (Bogers et al., 2019). In my Doctoral Study, I will be focusing on successful marketing strategies in the automotive dealership operation, and with the new insight on open innovation, this will fill the gap in the literature review of the study.
How do you view yourself as a global change agent in light of the topics covered in this seminar course?
As an entrepreneur, new ideas are constantly surfacing and to channel these ideas into making a social change. I will utilize the skills and knowledge on innovation covered in this course to interact with employees, to help improve the working condition, offering incentives and boost their morals. By embarking on these conditions, employees will be satisfied, and will endeavor to produce more, thereby improving the way of life of their families., and the when employees are happy, the organization will be successful in the global economy.

How does the research and content presented in this course inform or relate to your individual Doctoral Study? What research methods or strategic analysis approaches might be useful in answering the questions that you have posed?
My doctoral study was on business funding strategies that women small business owners use to sustain their businesses beyond 5 years. The content in this course relates to my doctoral study topic because the women I interviewed for my study did incorporate innovation into their strategic planning process for their businesses.
According to García-Vidales and Maldonado-Guzmán (2019), business leaders use innovation to discover possible business opportunities and to compete in the marketplace.
Consider the articles you have read and evaluate how the methods of data collection, research statistics employed, and overall research designs have enlightened your individual approach to research. Is there anything about your approach to your individual research that the literature in this seminar has reinforced or confirmed?
Since I have completed my doctoral study, I was more laser focused on identifying the methods of data collection and research designs that were used in the articles we have read. My doctoral study was a qualitative multiple case study. It has been interesting reading the articles in this course and seeing other qualitative methods being applied to research. I am a numbers person, and I always fascinated with quantitative methods used in research.
Were you exposed to any new sources of data that will be useful in your Doctoral Study? Be specific in your answer.
I have already completed my doctoral study. However, as I continue conducting my own research on various finance and business issues, I will be more focused on innovation management. I believe that innovation management is linked to every area of business. Since I am now more aware of innovation management research, I can incorporate it into my own future research.
One strategic analysis approach that I learned about in this course was where to look for innovation opportunities. According to Drucker (2002), there are four internal and three external areas where innovation opportunities can be found. The seven areas are (a) unexpected occurrences, (b) incongruities, (c) process needs, (d) industry and market changes, (e) demographic changes, (f) changes in perception, and (g) new knowledge.
How do you view yourself as a global change agent in light of the topics covered in this seminar course?
Yes, I see myself as a global change agent. I am someone who believes that using technology in a business is beneficial. I am now more aware of innovation management and how it impacts positive social change. When I completed my doctoral degree at Walden earlier this year, I was so motivated to be a global change agent. So much so that I re-enrolled to add another specialization to my degree. Now, I am motivated about incorporating innovation management into the work that I do as a global change agent.
