Narrowing Down Topic
First, I read through the list of topics and determined the ones I had an interest in studying further or knowing more about. From the chosen topics, I selected the ones I felt too strongly about, on any one side and eliminated them from the list of possible topics to write about (Booth, 2016). I selected the topic is thought I had substantial arguments from different angles and to narrow it down, I considered the aspect of possible solutions to the problem of international drug trafficking instead of tackling the whole topic which would entail a wide scope from financial, productions and the individuals involved.
Critically Analyzing Sources
First is to consider the authors of the source in question. The information on the author provided should inform of the authors’ qualification, such that one can determine if they qualify to write on the topic (GSU, 2020). If these criteria checks true, it is likely the source is scholarly.
Second, the publisher of the information. For scholarly sources, the publisher should be academic institution, professional organization, a scholarly trade publisher (GSU, 2020). Also, the publisher should avail the peer-review or editorial policy. If the publisher information is provided and meets this criteria, the source is likely to be scholarly.
Lastly, the purpose of the source or information there-in is crucial in determining if a source is scholarly. One should look at the purpose of the information, which the authors should make clear in scholarly works. Further, the information should be fact, not opinion or propaganda (GSU, 2020). The point of view should be impartial and appear objective.
Summaries
Matthew Jenner (2011) argues that although international drug trafficking is a global problem, the solution lies in universally legalizing drugs to eliminate the profit advantage from the traffickers and give monitoring and control to states (Jenner, 2011). With the power to regulate the drugs trade, states will keep the drug market in check and avoid the supernormal profits that drive drug cartels to limitless ends.
Cardoso and Netos (2016) argue that the emphasis on criminalizing the drug problem and application of standard punitive model instead of alternative solutions has hindered solving the problem at state and thus global level (Cardoso & netos, 2016). The authors propose the application of restorative justice to international and national drug trafficking to deal with drug offences instead of the current retributive approaches.
