Which of the following two ways of knowing has had the greatest impact on your understanding of nursing science?
Empirical knowledge was the first source of information that influenced my understanding of nursing science. My first degree is a Bachelor of Science in Applied Science. The focus of this education is on anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and psychology in order to develop nursing fundamentals. These fundamentals are founded on facts and science. One aspect of nursing practice is the development of evidence-based practices, which is based on facts and science (Ferguson, 2018).
Second, my understanding of nursing science was influenced by personal knowledge. Prior to getting my nursing degree, I worked in a hospital and a nursing home as a tech/aide. nurse’s I learned a lot by listening to the stories of patients, families, nurses, and coworkers during this time. It can be humbling to get to know others through sharing of experiences. Through reflection and self-awareness, they assisted me in growing and learning about myself. I was genuine and able to create strong nurse-patient relationships because it allowed me to gain a better understanding of myself (Campbell et al., 2018).
Which two ways of knowing have you never considered before, and how will they influence your nursing practice in the future?
Unknowing has never occurred to me as a method of knowing. It’s crucial to be open to other people’s ideas when learning new skills. I believe that by exchanging ideas, a more effective nursing practice can be developed. Many times, it is the combination of all ideas, not the strength of one person or the other, that makes the difference (Campbell et al., 2018). Because I am new to nursing leadership, I can use this way of knowing to improve my nursing practice. Being open to others can expand my knowledge by allowing me to learn from their experiences and ideas, which can help my facility’s nursing practice develop even further.
Emancipatory knowing is a concept of knowledge that I hadn’t previously considered. Patient/human rights are at the heart of emancipatory knowledge. It also entails being aware of the social factors influencing the patient’s situation, as well as what actions can be taken to assist larger communities dealing with similar issues (Campbell et al., 2018). As a leader, I can guide our community-supporting events by understanding the social factors that influence the community. When it is determined that a section of the community has limited access to healthcare, I could advocate for the expansion of primary care offices in that area. I could promote community gardens and education sessions when there is a need for a healthy way of life.
Give an example of how nursing science has incorporated the six ways of knowing to close a gap in healthcare outcomes.
Carper developed the ways of knowing in 1978, with Chinn and Kramer adding the emancipatory way of knowing in 2008. These ways of knowing led to the formation of nursing as a profession and the establishment of nursing education and practice. Understanding the different ways of knowing encourages advanced learners to think critically and reflect on what they’ve learned (Campbell et al., 2018).
Nursing can improve healthcare outcomes by utilizing ways of knowing. A scenario and reflection have been shared by Griffith and Board (2018). A patient with chronic leg ulcers was being treated by a home health nurse, a wound care nurse specialist, and their primary care provider (PCP). The specialist has recently recommended hospitalization for intravenous antibiotics, which the patient has declined. The home health nurse based her recommendations on her empirical knowledge of evidence-based practice, wound care, dressing changes, and previous observations. She took advantage of her naive knowledge by seeking additional advice from colleagues and drug reps. The PCP, home health nurse, and patient worked together to select a new dressing type as a treatment option that allowed her to remain at home. Respect for autonomy is one of the ethical principles. The home health nurse applies her ethical knowledge to respect the autonomy of the patient and his or her right to consent to treatment. To make this decision, the patient must be well-informed. To avoid overuse of power, it’s critical to take a patient-centered approach to conversation. It is necessary for the home health nurse to think about her own experiences. She and others may have differing viewpoints, but she must ensure that those viewpoints do not interfere with the care she is providing. The home health nurse must now take on the role of patient advocate. The aesthetic knowledge of the home health nurse aids her in comprehending the clinical situation that the patient is in. This patient may be in pain or isolated from others. She understands the patient’s perspective of her situation by using empathy (Griffith & Board, 2018). This patient may be unable to travel or may be experiencing financial difficulties as a result of his or her hospitalization, prompting the patient’s desire to receive treatment at home. It is beneficial for the home health nurse to consider these social circumstances using her emancipatory knowledge. In this scenario, the nurse used her ways of knowing to help the patient achieve his or her goal and close the gap, resulting in the desired healthcare outcome.
