Overview of the subject
This week, we’ll look at how tectonic forces cause the earth’s crust to change via folding and faulting. We’ll also talk about mass wasting, which is the movement of sediment downslope due to gravity. We’ll also read another chapter from The Control of Nature, “Los Angeles Against the Mountains.” The tensions between humans and nature in home complexes in the landslide-prone foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains are chronicled in this chapter.
Rocks are stressed by tectonic forces. Rocks are stretched and thinned as tensional stress pulls the crust apart. The crust is shortened and thickened as compressional stress pushes rock together. Shear tension causes chunks of rock to move past each other due to transverse motion.
Because they are under greater pressure and are hotter than rocks at shallow depths, rocks deep in the crust distort by folding when they are stressed. Rocks at the crust’s surface are colder and brittle, and they bend due to faulting. Anticlines, synclines, domes, and basins are all examples of physical features created by folding. Normal faults are caused by tensional stress, while reverse faults or thrust faults are caused by compressional stress.
Earthquakes are caused by the movement of rocks along a fault, which releases seismic energy. Seismic waves carry seismic energy through the rock. Earthquakes can cause various risks, such as tsunamis and landslides, in addition to the visible devastation of structures caused by seismic waves.
The downslope movement of any size sediment under the effect of gravity and friction is known as mass wasting. The angle of repose is the maximum steepness at which unconsolidated material (loose rock or soil) can maintain its slope. When this angle is exceeded, the substance will move due to gravity’s impact. Water is usually a major driver of mass waste because it adds weight and lubricates unconsolidated material, allowing it to overcome the friction that keeps it stuck in place and move downslope. Mass waste events are dangerous situations that can result in the loss of human life and property. Before completing the tasks and discussions, read the prescribed chapters of the textbook (available for free at Opengeology.org/textbook) and view the mini-lecture videos. The readings and videos this week are about crustal deformation caused by folding and faulting, as well as mass wasting processes such as landslides and debris flows.

Question for Discussion
In his book “Los Angeles Against the Mountains,” John McPhee describes the difficulties that people encounter when housing is erected on the San Gabriel Mountains, which are prone to landslides and debris flows. Consider the following questions before writing a discussion post that outlines your point of view:1. Who is responsible for the cost of preventing landslides in Pasadena?
2. Who is responsible for the costs of landslides? Is this a reasonable cost-sharing arrangement?
3. How would you fund the prevention and repair of landslides?
Read and respond to a classmate’s post after you’ve made your initial post.Evans Evans Evans Evans Evans Evans Evans
1. Who is responsible for the cost of preventing landslides in Pasadena?
The Los Angeles County Flood Control District, or “FLOOD,” is the body responsible for the construction of debris basins that finally avert widespread landslide damage in Pasadena, according to “The Control of Nature.” The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and the Department of Public Works are in charge of this district. Tax monies are used to fund this government body, which is funded by additional research and the assumption of the obvious (about 3.55 billion annual dollars). The people of Los Angeles are the ones who pay.2. Who is responsible for the costs of landslides? Is this a reasonable cost-sharing arrangement?
In the end, if a public space is harmed, the damage is paid for by taxes. As a result, the residents of Los Angeles County are responsible for the damage. If an individual’s private property is damaged, the owner of that property is responsible for the cost, either out of pocket or through insurance. The Gentile family sued Los Angeles County in “The Control of Nature” for personal property damages caused by a debris basin that was not maintained. They were given a monetary settlement. It should be noted, however, that the legal fees and settlement are all paid proportionately by Los Angeles County residents.
3. How would you fund the prevention and repair of landslides?
To put it another way, if repair and prevention are governed by a governmental agency, it makes no difference how they are paid for because they will be paid for by Los Angeles taxpayers through tax dollars. For better or worse, the residents of this neighborhood decided to live in an area with a high danger of flooding and landslides. I believe that the current method of obtaining funding (through the citizens of Los Angeles County) is adequate. An international, national, or even state governmental entity should not be involved in this matter, in my opinion. This is a problem unique to Los Angeles County, and I believe that only they and their inhabitants should bear responsibility for it. I absolutely do not believe I am responsible for compensating folks for losses incurred as a result of their poor home choices.
