1) This week, I’d like you to estimate how much trash your family tosses away in pounds per day. Don’t get too worked up over it…just it’s an estimate. Now divide that figure by the number of persons in your family to find out how many a) pounds per person per day of rubbish is produced in your home; b) multiply the pounds per person of trash you calculated by the 30 students in the class! That’s the amount of garbage your class generated in a single day! c) Multiply your pounds of trash per person per day by 7 million, the population of the greater Dallas-Fort Worth area. Every day, that’s a big lot of garbage! Consider how much larger that number would be in a year!!
Tell us the three numbers for your discussion. 1) List and explain 2) 5 things you could do to lessen your waste stream that you came up with (a,b, and c). Please don’t respond with basic replies from the book. The five items listed above should be things you can do in your own home and life to reduce your consumption and, as a result, your waste stream. 3) Include a photo of rubbish in your environment that is especially meaningful to you! The image you choose should convey to your classmates the impact that an excess of waste in the environment is having on the planet. Instead of a picture, I’ve provided a little video…..
2) Respond substantively to two of your classmates’ posts.
Post 1: I estimate that my family throws out about 15 pounds of garbage per day. My home has four people, therefore each of us wastes about 3.75 pounds per day on average. When you multiply this by the 30 students in our class, you get a total of slightly over 112 pounds of rubbish produced per day! The anticipated total quantity of trash created per day by the broader DFW area is 26.250 million when I multiplied my daily waste average by 7 million! In light of these staggering figures, there are numerous things that I and others can and should do to reduce daily trash generation. Using refillable containers, such as soap dispensers or food containers that can be refilled at specific supermarket stores, is one of the ways I may lessen my waste stream. Pickle jars and sour cream tubs that can’t be refilled can be cleaned and reused as storage containers or Tupperware. I can also use cloth towels that can be washed and reused instead of paper towels and paper napkins as much as feasible. My grandmother reduces waste by setting out a day or two at the end of each week or every other week to utilize or combine all of the leftover food before returning to the grocery shop. Finally, rather than guessing how much of each item I need at the supermarket and risking things expiring, I can limit my waste stream by planning meals and calculating specific food quantities. The photo I’ve posted is from last year, when my friends and I spent the day picking up rubbish in our neighborhood.
2nd Post:
1) 10,5,150 dollars My household consists of only two people, and we do not generate a lot of trash because we are not at home very often. We have a habit of tossing out leftovers and plastic bags containing food.
2) Use fewer tissues and buy reusable tissues that you can hand wash. 2. Make sure to recycle anything that can be recycled. 3. Purchase other items that do not come in a package that you will have to discard. 4. Begin composting; the majority of our garbage consists of discarded foods or the ends of vegetables and fruits. 5. Instead of using plastic bags to pack food, get more reusable products such as glass items.https://nctc.instructure.com/files/5759444/download?download_frd=1&verifier=w784TXx6PaJ2FfqxiucY4smbVLT2AFaKdd5jBJTt
