1 ECO202 Macroeconomic Theory and Policy (2020-2021)
Second Writing Assignment
The total score is 100.
The goal of this assignment is to estimate the Phillips curve and Okun’s Law for the country of your choice and write a well-structured research report about the entire process of acquiring and refining your data, estimating, and interpreting the estimated coefficients for the country of your choice based on the theoretical background of your models and empirical implications of the estimated equations.
Your post should cover the instructions below, among other things, in order to assist you. Please keep in mind that your final paper must have a complete framework from beginning to end, as well as internal coherence. These phases are meant to aid in the organization of your paper, not to be considered as questions to be answered mechanically.
Please visit the following website for assistance with writing, referencing, and avoiding plagiarism: http://www.writing.utoronto.ca/advice/using-sources
1- Select a time period that is not less than 20 years old and as current as possible. Find the following time series data for your country from trustworthy sources (World Bank, IMF, UN, or your country’s local statistical agency) for each year: Inflation rate, unemployment rate, and real GDP in local currency (the GDP deflator inflation rate is preferable). It’s a good idea to offer a description of the data sources that were utilised. (15 marks)
2- Present the information in the form of tables and graphs that you believe will be useful to your audience. Discuss the sources of your data, the nature of the data, and any assumptions you might make in order to create the necessary data. The tables and graphs should be placed in the appendix. a total of ten points
3- In an equation like this, you may use the Microsoft Excel LINEST function to estimate the a and b coefficients in a variant version of the Philips Curve:
t t 1 Yt a b c d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d d
Note that in this form of the Phillips curve, instead of the unemployment rate, we have real output, hence b must be positive, not negative.
– Instead of the LINEST function, you can use any other statistical software you’re familiar with.
– If you’re having trouble using the LINEST feature, look up instructions on YOUTUBE. Using the tutorials and my example file, you can learn it in a matter of minutes.
– Check out the example on the site for an example of how to use the LINEST function for estimations.
– All estimated coefficients and statistics must be supplied in their entirety. You must include the exact output of the LINEST function or any other software you use. (15 marks)

4- Rearrange your calculated equation into the typical Phillips Curve, as shown below, to determine the natural level of output for your chosen country. Y Y t t1 t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t
Talk about the size and sign of these numbers. Discuss the model’s statistics, such as R2. (15 marks)
5- You should estimate Okun’s Law in this section by estimating an equation like this:
t t 1 b gyt u u an an an an an an an an an an an an an an an an an an an an a
Where gyt is the real GDP growth rate. All estimated coefficients and statistics must be supplied in their entirety.
The estimation’s exact computer output should be included. (15 marks)
6- To get and g, which is the typical growth rate, rearrange the estimated equation into standard Okun’s Law as shown below: u u g g t t1 yt yt yt yt yt yt yt yt yt yt yt yt yt yt yt yt yt
Talk about the size and sign of these numbers. Discuss the model’s statistics, such as R2. a total of ten points
7- General arrangement, presentation quality, paper inventiveness and elaboration, as well as suitable referencing: (twenty points)
Concerns about administration:
– Each student should complete the project independently. By February 15, 2021, you should send me the following information by email:
– Your first and last name, as well as your student ID number.
– In order of preference, a list of six or seven countries from the following page list. I’ll pick a country for you to work on and inform you of it. After my approval, you will not be able to alter your country. On a first-come, first-served basis, countries will be assigned.
– The quality of the analysis is always more important than the quantity. However, your assignment may be around 2000 words long (excluding the tables, graphs, and references).
– You must include all of your references in your report. Plagiarism, as you may know, is a breach of university rules that is pursued. If I have reason to believe your assignments are plagiarized, I may use Turnitin to check them.
– The assignment must be submitted through Quercus by March 28 at 9 p.m. The names and student ID numbers must be included on the cover page of the assignment; otherwise, your grades may be incorrectly recorded.
– There will be no extensions to the deadline. No excuse, such as a network outage or a system outage… is allowed.
If you miss this project, you won’t be able to make up for it with anything else.
