Amna,
It is critical, in my opinion, to consider their history because today’s culture in the United States, such as agriculture and cities, is derived from these regions. We can pinpoint the origins of agriculture and their impact on the United States in greater detail. We must understand and respect them because they are the foundation of our lives.
The origins of hunters, gatherers, and agriculture are described in the textbook chapter “Follow the Corn.” This chapter explains how they laid the groundwork for modern people’s lives. What strikes me as remarkable is how advanced the Mayans were in mathematics and astronomy. They use them to correctly predict future events, and they discovered the concept of zero. Even modern astronomers are surprised by this because they are a very complex and important foundation all over the world today. Overall, this chapter is useful for learning about cultural history.
The title of this chapter, “Follow the Corn,” refers to the process by which a central system of power exerts control over the surrounding land and its constituents. According to textbooks, the Olmec civilization ruled the Valley of Mexico and built Teotihuacan, a grand metropolis. For example, in the Valley of Mexico, the Tepanec people subjugated Culhuacan, Texcoco, and all of their subject people. We can see that until the world was organized, people continued to dominate and unite other regions.
Winona LaDuke’s TED talk highlights the importance of food for people who have passed down the same recipes for generations. It is a culture because it connects them to their past and their origins. Keeping their food allows us to maintain our historical connection. As a result, we have a better understanding of our past, story, and origin.
I don’t know much about Christopher Columbus, but I do know that he discovered the American continent by accident during his voyage. I had a basic understanding of them, but the required articles helped me understand him better. He ordered the slaughter, which was not what I expected. My opinion of him has shifted from one of an innovator to one of a cruel individual.
The articles “Columbus Day Comic” and “Flawed Critique of Columbus Day” both claim that Christopher Columbus committed atrocities and should not be honored. The article “Flawed Critique of Columbus Day,” on the other hand, is based on facts, whereas “Columbus Day Comic” is less objective.
The term “Doctrine of the Discovery,” according to the textbook, refers to the claim that possession of the entire world west of that line would be open to Spanish conquest, and all of it to Portuguese conquest. This means that no one owns any land, and anyone who discovers it claims it as their own. Indigenous peoples were, in fact, driven off their land by Europeans.
According to the textbook chapter “Culture of Conquest,” European settlers attempted to take the land of indigenous peoples. The chapter “Terminal Narratives” caught my attention. It tells the story of the annihilation of the California Indians. To hide the mass killing, proponents of the default position emphasize disease attrition over other causes that are just as deadly, if not more so. Furthermore, the disease arose as a result of European causes. It’s terrible, and I can’t believe what I’m hearing.
