The Field Of Electronics And Microelectronics
Microelectronics Milestones
ECE 321 Writing Assignment – Winter 2014 –Due 3/11/2014
Instructor: Malgorzata Jeske
You can choose from two types of writing assignment.
- Microelectronics Milestones
Jaeger’s textbook on page 6 presents a list of important milestones in the evolution of the filed of electronics and microelectronics from 1 874 to 2000. The list in your textbook ends in 2000, but the revolution continues. Microelectronics is becoming nano-electronics and the race increases its speed. There’s no denying that the microelectronics revolution of the past few decades has changed our world. Since we are studying microelectronics in this class, I’d like you to identify one milestone that in your opinion could be added to the list in the textbook for years between 2000 and 2013. Please write a short paper identifying the milestone and describing why you think it is the important one. Also, please describe its impact on one area of our lives. This is a very broad area and it might be difficult to choose. Please keep in mind that it is more critical how you describe and support your choice than if your milestone is the most important one. So pick an example of a milestone from 2000 to 2011 that you find interesting, and write the following:
1) describe what is the essence of that milestone event/discovery/invention /new device/new material/new application and why you think it is a milestone.
2) explain how it has changed an aspect of life;
3) discuss what you think about this change, is it for better or worse?
- Graphene
Graphene can be described as a one-atom thick layer of graphite. High-quality graphene is strong, light, nearly transparent and an excellent conductor of heat and electricity.
Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov at the University of Manchester won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010 “for ground braking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material grapheme”
List of topics to choose from:
- Graphene and its properties that make it such interesting material for electronics applications
- Graphene–based transistor for analog applications
- Graphene for sensor applications
- Graphene-based transistors for digital VLSI applications
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
The paper should be about two to three page long. This is an individual assignment. It is not a formal report, but it should be well-written, neatly typed, grammatical and spell-checked. Please format it as a conference paper as shown below and use “Times New Roman” size 10 fonts for the text and size 20 for title lines.
You can use any of the three submission methods given below:
- The hard copy of your paper submitted in class on 3/11/2014.
- Bring it to the ECE office and give it to one of the staff members not later than 3/11/2014. Please ask for the date to be stamped on your paper. The ECE office closes usually at 5:00 pm (might close earlier so please check with the staff)
- You can also drop an electronic copy to the 321 class Dropbox on D2L.

Unless there are six authors or more give all authors’ names; do not use “et al.”.
