The Exchange of Information Between Individuals Discussion
After reading Chapters 3 and 4 in your text and the additional resources in Week 2 Course Documents, share an experience that you have had with intercultural communication at work. What cultures were involved? Was there conflict? If so, what was it about? Were there communication difficulties?
What role did perception and attribution play in your encounter? How could the situation have been improved? What were the most interesting and helpful aspects you read about in either our text and/or in the additional resources this week in terms of managing diversity?

I would like to start my discussion by stating the importance of communication in an organization. It is not just a process of sharing information among the employees in the firm but a key function of sharing thoughts and perceptions with everyone around.
This would mainly affect immigrants in any country. The key reason being the language barrier and then the cultural difference. I struggled initially when I started working as a Research Assistant back in my University while pursuing my Masters in Engineering. Growing up English was not my first language. So, I constantly struggled to express myself with my fellow students and Professors.
During my first job as a Software Developer, I faced my first cultural shock. Everyone around me was being extra nice. For someone who had grown up in India, “being nice” has an entirely different meaning. So some of my colleagues thought I was being rude.
It took almost three months to completely understand the way people work and function in America. After talking to them and making them understand my situation, things have gotten a lot better. Perception did play an important role here. If I had not understood the working culture in the US, I would not have survived here for so long. It is very important to have a positive outlook on everything around us.
To talk about attribution, I need to share a short incident that happened to me. I guess all of the Asians here would have faced this in their lifetime. As soon as they meet us, it is a common perception that we Asians are good at the STEM courses. This is not always true. In my company too, I faced a similar situation.
The Fundamental Attribution Bias from the textbook(Organizational Behavior: A Practical, Problem-Solving Approach) best describes this. Instead of looking at my Resume or asking me if I am from a particular stream, some of my colleagues immediately made an assumption that I would have been from one of the STEM majors.
But this was almost 3 years ago. I guess the situation is getting a lot better. People have been extremely warm and welcoming at the workplace. This mainly is because of Diversity Management at the workplace.
A lot of firms have been encouraging behavioral changes. Educating their employees on the seriousness of Diversity. This is a great way of making progress.
After reading the textbook, something that I found very interesting is the fact that the involvement of more women actually giving out better results. This actually proves an old saying from my country that goes like this -“An Educated woman results in an educated nation”.

I have been working in intercultural environment for most of my jobs. Especially with my current job, we have colleagues who speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Cantonese, Turkish and Hebrew. We have an extremely diversified team with people from various backgrounds and experiences.
Conflicts of different sizes are normal in our day-to-day work, which comes from intercultural communication, as well as, fast-paced working environment, high pressure of job and cross-department cooperation. One of the conflicts happened with a joke, one of the accountants from the finance team made a comment in office regarding the poor quality of paperwork submitted from one of the sales associates.
The comment was said in a humoring tone by compliment that it was the first time that the paperwork submitted at the time did not need to be corrected and re-submitted. Our office is an open environment with people from different teams sharing the open space, which means everyone in the office can hear the comment. As a result, the sales associate was not very happy about the public comment.
This situation could be improved by perception and attribution approach. It is important and helpful to put yourself into other people’s shoes, trying to feel what they feel and think what they think. Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to monitor our own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate between them, and to use this information to guide our thinking and actions.
(Kinicki, A., & Fugate, M. 2015, p116) Respect, compassion and care towards the other people would be the key for one to perceive other’s emotional and react to it in a most appropriate way.
The most helpful aspects to me is that exposing people to others with different backgrounds and characteristics “adds a more personal approach to diversity by helping managers get to know and respect others who are different. (Kinicki, A., & Fugate, M. 2015, p139). Opening up yourself and making personal connection to others is the key to understand the diversity and differences between you and your co-workers. From the ground of understanding, we will manage to work better together.
