Recall a recent decision that you had difficulty making. How did you diagnose and solve the challenge? Were the consequences good, bad, or both? (Gossett, https://digital.com/quotes/leadership/, August 5th, 2020) As a huge follower of him, I strongly believe that a leader is not someone who jumps in front of people after figuring out where they are going, but he is someone who chooses a destination and convinces others of the merits of taking that trip(Oswald, Jan 2020).
A leader is someone who makes others believe in themselves and their merits. Often, leaders are put in a predicament of making the toughest decisions. Recently I did come across one such situation. Because of the Pandemic, there were a lot of budget cuts made. As a result, I had to let go of some people in my team. Also, I needed to make the decision as soon as possible.
Diagnosing the Situation and Solving the Challenge:
I realized that the firm was in a lot of pressure. This was an unprecedented time. With everything shut down, I realized the market was too low for anybody to get a job anywhere else. So, I sat down with everyone and made them realize the difficulty of the situation.
I suggested that instead of letting go of some people in my team, we can make salary cuts off everyone’s paycheck. Everyone in my team immediately accepted this proposal. There have been no layoffs from my team, instead, we did take off a 20% from everyone’s paycheck including mine.
Consequences:
Most of my Colleagues did let go of a lot of people from their respective teams. Now since the situation had gotten better, our budgets are brought back to the normal. So, most of my colleagues are in search of new team members now.
As a result, they need to retrain the newcomers and should start all over. But with my case, since I had retained my old team, I have no issues and I am good with the progress of the project. As far as I am concerned, I don’t think I would do anything differently if the same situation comes in the future.

In my role as Business Development Manager at IBM. I was responsible for a team of five tasked with organizing all our client events. As you are aware IBM is a top provider of enterprise security software. Our client events are key to driving revenue. We host conferences and other events that feature expert speakers on key issues in the industry.
These events help us to attract prospective new clients and to retain our existing top clients. But Unfortunately, we noticed that event attendance dropped by almost 15% from 2016 to 2017 and that customer retention also dropped during that time period.
Then when I sat down to start planning the 2018 event schedule, I knew that it would be critical to get attendance back to at least 2016 levels. Then I sat down with my team members and I also interviewed our top sales representatives.
I had some ideas about why attendance had dropped, but I wanted to look at it from all angles. Our sales reps felt like we could do a better job marketing the events through social media.
Based on this internal and few external feedback, I was able to revamp the event agendas to include additional topics and additional opportunities for networking.
I then created a whole new marketing plan, including a social media marketing component, to promote the new and improved agendas for 2018. We brought in a social media consultant to help us amp up exposure on both LinkedIn and Twitter.
This is indeed a happy ending. There was Increase in event attendance by 25%. The candidate exceeded his goal of turning around falling attendance.
I have learned that We could had sent out a questionnaire to past attendees and partners and asked for their input on how we could improve our events. In the feedback, we could have even known that our clients had great ideas for new topics and speakers and we also saw a clear desire for more structured networking as part of the events.
The only changes I would have done was collecting more feedback from the existing clients and asking them for further suggestions in order to improve our quality of service done
