PART TWO RESPOND TO the 3 REMARKS ON PLAY Top of Form Bottom of Form Top of Form · A Taste of Honey and theBA Kitchen Sink The description of this play being a kitchen sink is completely accurate. As a kitchen sink holds everything from food, dishes, water, soap, etc. A Taste of Honey includes a little bit of everything too. The audience is introduced to Jo and Helen which represent the lower class individuals that can barely make ends meet. Then, Peter is introduced and it is explained that he is young and has money. He represents the upper class during this time period. Next, outside of class, race is discussed often. Jo’s boyfriend makes it clear that his race could be a deterrent for Jo and Helen when he asks Jo what her mother will think of her marrying him (23). Therefore, it is evident that his race is different from Jo’s race and this is confirmed when the boy replies that Helen will see “a coloured boy” when she looks at him (23). Lastly, sexual orientation is also covered in the play. Jo has a gay roommate, Geof. Jo insinuates that Geof is different and that he may have been with a man which is why his landlady threw him out. The audience can infer that something is different about Geof when Jo says, “I’ve always wanted to know about people like you” (48). Her statement tells the audience that Geof is different and allows them to infer that he could be gay. This is the last of the mixed bag that can be found within A Taste of Honey. A Taste of Honey was written in 1958 by a British dramatist by name of Shelagh Delaney the play was known as a young angry man but, all she was trying to do was show that social issues for women that was in the working class was real. Throughout the play In the 1950s, Jo who was in her teens became Pregnant by an African American Sailor which he became her boyfriend. He soon had to go back to the sea Jo had to find her way back into a working class neighborhood. However, family wise her father does not exist and her mother leaves to go shack up with a car salesman. Jo then meets a art student name Geoff, he was soon kick out by the lady for being gay, they both have set up an unstoppable relationship that is happy then out of no where Jo’s mother comes back and destroy both of their life’s. It is understandable why the words, “kitchen sink” is applicable because there is the absence of traditional values. Immediately, the play opens up with a mother-daughter relationship that explores what the model for a mother looks like. Helen, the mother, thinks so little of her child’s feelings. It is this type relationship that means Jo, the daughter, has no motherhood on which to base her own behavior. Helen does not act like a mother, nurturing and caring for her child. It is no wonder that Jo does not act like a child, respecting and obeying her mother. In fact, Jo calls her mother by her name. While it is very difficult to follow the play without finding anything positive about it, maybe appealing to the “kitchen sink” genre releases some of the complexities to follow. In other words, while development of A Taste of Honey, its characters are coming into focus, and it appears to be capturing the diversity of the characters when it comes to class, race, gender, and sexual orientation. This play is going to be a very interesting read. Bottom of Form
