Description
End of Course Paper:
Students are required to write a 3-4 page paper, not including a title page or References/Works Cited page, at the end of the course showing their understanding of sociology and the materials covered. Papers must be written in Times New Roman 12 pt font, double-spaced with 1-inch margins.
Find an historical event that happened in the year you were born. If for some reason you do not want to disclose the year you were born, you can improvise, provided that you are not ridiculously young (3 months old) or old (200 years old). For example, if you were born in 1973, you might choose to write about the world oil crisis. If you were born in 1996, you could use the year when, what is now Google, was started as a research project by two Ph.D. students at Stanford University.
After finding an event, incorporate the concepts and theories you have learned in this class (e.g., socialization, theoretical perspectives, stratification, race, gender, social class, globalization etc.) to analyze the historical event. In what way did the event change society and social relations? What are the political, economic, cultural, and social effects of the event? How did it change everyday life? What does the event reveal about society? Race? Class? Gender? How would the theoretical perspectives (functionalist, conflict, and symbolic interactionist perspectives) explain the event? These questions are to get you started thinking about an analysis. Do not write the paper as a series of answers to these questions. Choose a key idea or thesis to direct the paper.
For example, the creation of Google has revolutionized the way people search the World Wide Web, and as a result, information is more easily dispersed. You can then analyze how a world with information readily accessible has changed your life and society. Has this change created a more democratic system? Is there more freedom as a result? How is the Internet and access to information affecting inequality in society?
In writing this paper, DO NOT spend time summarizing the event. Rather, analyze the event from a sociological perspective. Here is the recommended guideline:
Introduction: 1 paragraph
Summary of Event: 1-2 paragraphs
Sociological Analysis of Event: Rest of the paper
Strong conclusionYou are required to use 2 academic, peer-reviewed articles in addition to outside sources (books, journals, newspaper articles, magazines, etc.) to support your findings. You may not use wiki sources such as Wikipedia.
The historical event was on November 1982 – The Dedication of Vietnam Veterans Memorial
