Each of these questions need 2 references and need to be 250 words long. Not all questions within each question need to be answered. You can generalize each paragraph. This does not have to be APA style, but I would like the two references for each activity to be right underneath. In other words, don’t put all the references all at the end combined.
Activity 1.1: Introduction to Strategic Planning (250 words)
Conduct an Internet search of the terms Strategic Thinking and Strategic Planning to explore what Wikipedia and one or two other open, public sources say about these topics. (Feel free to use the YouTube videos linked in Course Material for Week 1, too.)
Based on what you learn, use the first paragraph to define strategic thinking and strategic planning. Then briefly trace the history of strategy development as it has evolved, both historically (often in the military) and over recent decades.
Then, consider that there is often a difference between what a general on-line search and a more scholarly search uncover about a topic. For the second paragraph, find and read two or three credible, refereed journal articles focused on these same terms. Carefully describe what the academic literature says about what strategic leadership is and what it is not.
In the third paragraph, discuss the importance of strategic leaders and managers asking the right questions and addressing them in both the development and the implementation stages of strategic planning. Use this week’s reading assignments in both the Simons (2010) text and The HRB Guide to Thinking Strategically as your primary source material. Also consult the “Course Material” for Week 1.
Activity 1.2: Internal Strategic Planning Analysis (250 words)
This Activity is, in essence, a mini-case study. As you work through the questions, answer them with a specific, familiar organization in mind—human resources.
In the first paragraph, describe your role as a Human Resource Director and your relationship with some of the key leaders who are responsible for strategic thinking and planning. As you write, consider issues like these: What role do you play in defining and/or implementing this strategy? (I have a lot of say in planning as I have years of experience) From a strategic perspective, why is an HR director’s role important to an organization?
In the second paragraph, define and evaluate the organization’s mission, vision, and the strategic philosophy/approach that appears to be in place. As you write, consider issues like these: How closely does the strategic planning process and its implementation grow out of the organizational identity? Why does identity matter? On a 100-point scale, how would you grade the organization’s strategic effectiveness? Explain your rationale for the grade you have assigned. (Our mission is to serve the residents in Minnesota. We are the Minnesota Department of Health and we serve our communities in many ways, such as health, pollution control, agriculture and much more).
In the third paragraph, describe your observations and/or experience with Red Ocean strategy as an employee, leader, or consumer. Also describe one industry or a product within an industry that you believe could represent Blue Ocean strategy.Activity 1.3: The Evolution of Strategic Planning (250 words)
Theorists and practitioners continually adapt and evolve their views about Strategic Planning in an effort to be ever more relevant and effective. While they propose a variety of approaches, each of these arguably falls into one of three broad categories—Classical/Deliberate, Emergent, or Adaptive. Find and read one or two credible, refereed journal articles that describe and evaluate the pros and cons to each of these three approaches.
In the first paragraph, describe the similarities and differences between and among these schools of thought.
In the second paragraph, explain which category best captures your own personal preferred approach to strategic leadership and tell why you think so.
Activity 2.1: The Human Side of Strategy (250 words)
The master’s in leadership and management program has emphasized the importance of people, human interaction, and relationships. Use the first paragraph to tease out the importance of the customer. Why do we want to define both who the customer is and is not? Why does the organization need to understand as fully as possible their customers/clients and their needs? How does this all relate to stakeholder relationships? Consider the elements in Simons’ Venn diagram and the help this diagram provides in identifying the primary customer and external relationships. How can customer awareness translate into organizational strength?
For the second paragraph, reflect on the importance of building strong internal relationships. Find (and cite) a refereed journal article that helps you describe some of the psychological aspects of competition vs. cooperation among and between employees. When would you use each approach? Explain.
How do leaders create and encourage an environment in which both creative tension and selfless cooperation thrive?
Activity 2.2: The Main Things (250 words)
In paragraph one, describe the importance of an organization knowing its core values and living them out. What makes this so difficult? Why is it important routinely and regularly to communicate core values in words and actions, particularly in decision-making? Consider the mission statement of your organization (or an organization very familiar to you). How does it articulate both its identity and its core values through its mission?
For the second paragraph, reflect on your personal mission statement: “I will remain a faithful servant of God. I will live with integrity, honesty, and trustworthiness. I will take care of the gift’s God has blessed me with. I will not fear anything, for God says, “have no fear”. I will have complete trust in His path for me and I take my crucibles and grow from them and never let them hold me down.” Core values: “Some of my core values are spirituality, integrity, honesty, and trustworthiness.” How true have you been to it? “Very” How do your personal mission and values align with the mission and values of the organization where you work? Why does this matter? “Sometimes my personal mission and values align with where I work. No place will ever align perfectly.”
How do you communicate your core values to others in your organization? How might you do that more effectively? What do your core values say about what you must change and what you cannot change? How else might you manage the strategic issues that keep you awake at night so that progress toward strategic goals happens without it killing you?
Activity 2.3: Productive Assessment (250 words)
Organizations that strive for efficiency try to “measure what matters.” Sometimes what we say is most important (what matters) is not lived out, thus creating a values gap. We may not even realize that gap exists if we never measure it! It is one thing to articulate values; it’s quite another to evaluate behaviors to ensure consistency. A good check is self-assessment. For example, what do your credit card and bank statements reveal about your true personal priorities?
For the first paragraph, respond to these questions: What does your organization consistently measure? Human Resources constantly measures customer service. What does that indicate about what truly matters? How does this apply to your personal life as a leader and manager? What are you measuring to ensure you are doing what you need to do? We measure trust in our stockholders.
For the second paragraph, discuss the importance of identifying what NOT to do. How might you motivate employees to avoid those behaviors and focuses—without setting a negative tone? How might a leader inspire others to value organizational boundaries?
