Steps Taken to Develop A Trusting Relationship
Yvette is a third-year physical therapist student, who is living on the East Coast with her.
Yvette is a third-year physical therapist student, who is living on the East Coast with her grandparents while she attends college. Her parents and brother live on the West Coast, and her mother is the only child of the grandparents. Recently, Yvette’s grandmother was hospitalized following a cerebrovascular accident (stroke). She is currently receiving home care services. Because Yvette is the only one in the family to attend college, is majoring in a health care profession, and lives at the house with her grandparents, the family expects her to be its advocate.
The grandfather is not happy with the services that are being provided. Although the nurse comes once each week, he believes that she should be there daily. The grandmother is receiving physical therapy services three times each week for strengthening, conditioning, and ambulatory activities, but the grandfather thinks the therapist is “pushing” his wife too hard.
A home health aide comes in every day to assist the grandmother with activities of daily living, but the grandfather feels that she is invading his wife’s privacy. The occupational therapist has suggested changes in the home environment, including removal of scatter rugs, installation of grab bars in the bathtub, and a commode and hospital bed for the bedroom. Yvette thinks that although the clinicians are providing technically competent care, they are insensitive to the psychosocial needs of her family.
- How are the family dynamics affected by the circumstances?
- How are the roles and responsibilities of each family member altered?
- What can be done to bridge the geographical distance that exists?
- What steps can be taken to develop a trusting relationship with each family member?
