IDEA PAPER (This is a paper I wrote applying for a different college)
My name is Yile Tian, and I am applying for the Civil Engineering master’s program at Cal Poly Pomona with a focus on structural engineering.
I came from China and moved to Los Angeles in 2012 with my family. Looking back at those seven years of adapting and studying, I am pleased with who I am and the achievement that I accomplished today. I can still remember the struggle that I endured during my first year of high school. English is not my first language; therefore, the language barrier was my first challenge in my school life. I forced myself to speak up, discussing with my teachers, and making new friends, so that I could have a better English learning environment. With two years of practice, I built up my confidence in speaking and writing in English and completed all the required courses from high school. I always manage my time efficiently and find a balance between my social and study life to fulfill my college life, making it meaningful and compacted. I pursued my bachelor’s degree at California State University, Los Angeles, majoring in Civil Engineering. After four years as an undergraduate student, I found my interest in the subject and knowledge that I have learned in this major. Not only do I need to deliver the accurate calculation, but also to carry the responsibility to paramount the public safety, health, and welfare. To be a qualified engineer, I need to be serious about the education that I have already completed and the degree that I want to pursue in the future. With all the courses I took from school, I found my passion for structural engineering and willing to set up my career as a certified engineering designer. I graduated with an honor of Dean’s list for three consecutive years, and a cum laude in May 2019 with an Overall GPA of 3.70. I especially want to attend Cal Poly Pomona, since we have an exceptional faculty team and a great learning environment.
I am confident that Cal Poly Pomona will provide me with a robust understanding of engineering materials, and get me ready to step into the engineering field and perform my duty and responsibility as an engineer. As soon as I choose my path as an engineer, I set up my career to be a lifetime learner. Since technology and new code are developing rapidly, keeping my education is one of the commissions that I should do to refresh my knowledge. At the same time, I am spending my free time at BWU structural engineering company to gain more experience in a related field. The primary responsibility is to help the engineer preparing the residential floor and roof plan with AutoCAD. With my engineering analysis skills, I am also able to help my supervisor with the wind load, beam design, and retaining wall calculations. I am gaining my engineering experience in the company and decide to pursue my master’s degree with a structural focus.
The purpose of this statement is applying for the UCLA civil engineering master’s program. After four years as an undergraduate student at California State University, Los Angeles majoring in civil engineering. I received an excellent learning experience from CSULA and would like to pursue a higher education facility to finish my master’s degree with a focus on structural engineering. I finished all my courses in civil engineering, and it starts to have a strong connection with structural engineering. I enjoyed all my designing courses and took all of the classes with a structural focus.
With a strong fundamental knowledge in structural engineering, I received the “Engineering-in-Training” certification during my senior year in CSULA. Furthermore, I am currently preparing for my professional engineering exam and aiming to pass the test before my master’s graduation.
UCLA is being known as one of the most top learning facilities for the student who is seeking a quality education experience. With the optimistic perspectives, students who graduate from UCLA in any field of the industry could have a better chance of finding themselves as part of the community and be able to improve the surrounding with their outstanding performances. UCLA also earned its reputation as one of the top research-based universities; students would have sufficient access to resources, new technologies and types of equipment, and leading faculties. With all the adequate assistance at UCLA, numerous well-educated students contributed prominent game-changing innovations.
I am confident that UCLA will provide me with a robust understanding of engineering materials and get me ready to step into the engineering field and fulfill my duty and responsibility as an engineer.
I love to spend my free time researching new infrastructures, including all various contemporary buildings and bridges, I am always impressed by the designers and the numerous amount of engineering calculations and analysis.
At the same time, I also have a passion for transportation engineering as my second intended engineering field.
I graduated last year. Asian American scholarship (high school). Outstanding graduates. GPA (3.7/4.0).
I have Team working skills. Preparing good Presentations. Group leader…
