The following is the instruction for the writing assignment 1 (by September 20, Sunday, 11:59pm, ET). This is the first of three writing assignments, as described in the syllabus, and you are to choose two of those three assignments (so, you could skip this assignment).
Please let me know if you have any questions or how to write this paper. For a technical writing help, I encourage you to consult the AACC’s writing center or the virtual writing center (both available online)(see the left navigation bar for the virtual writing center or the homepage of this Canvas class – both are free!). For the first time use of the writing center in this class to improve your draft paper, I will give you extra half (0.5) points (added to your score of up to 5 points).
Objectives: This assignment is designed to help develop your sociological imagination by comparing and contrasting personal experiences and larger social structures of two generations and by applying several sociological concepts about socialization. More personally, I hope this assignment will give you an opportunity to reconnect with your family member. This assignment also meets the following learning objectives of the course: Explain the organization of society, and the interrelationship of its institutions and social groups; Explain the nature of culture and society; & Apply sociological principles to understanding how society changes.
Directions: Ask your (grant)parent about his/her life when he/she was your age (ideally, a grandparent of your gender)(if you don’t really have a [grand]parent you can talk to, you can talk to someone who is significantly older than you – at least your parents’ age)(if you are an older person and if you have a grown child, you can compare and contrast the experiences of socialization with your child – comparing & contrasting with when you were around your child’s age). What influenced him/her most as he/she was at/around your age now? One way to address this question is to ask about the most important things/events/activities/people to him/her around that age (and how so & why). You could also ask him/her if s/he had not experienced those most important things/events/activities/people, would s/he have turned out differently as a person.
Choose just one or two aspects/factors that interest you the most, and then ask yourself how your (grand)parent’s experience is similar to and different from your own situation about the same thing/event/activity/person/people that you chose to compare and contrast.
Alternatively, you could compare and contrast the most important agent(s) of socialization to you and your (grand)parent (so, the agent[s] might be the same OR different for each generation).
Either way, speculate what might account for the difference(s) in socialization across generations in relation to social structures/history/culture. Please also briefly discuss what your analysis tells you about the relationships among individuals, society, culture, and history.
You are required to apply at least seven sociological terms you have learned in this class, including the concepts of socialization, culture, and the sociological imagination, to make sense of the experiences of socialization between the two generations (so, at least 4 sociological terms beyond the three specified concepts). For example, you can use the looking-glass self, beliefs, symbols, anticipatory socialization, sanctions, subculture, dominant culture, and agents of socialization. Please briefly define all the sociological terms you use in your own words (not to plagiarize). A definition is not the same as an example or application.
Here’s what your paper should look like. Begin your paper with an introductory paragraph where you briefly define “socialization” and “culture,” in your own words and state which aspect(s)/factor(s) of socialization of your (grand)parent and you that you are going to analyze in your paper (1 paragraph).
Then, discuss your (grand)parent’s experience of socialization (just one or two aspects/factors)(please indicate the approximate time period when your [grand]parent was your age, such as in the early 1950s)(1 paragraph) and how that is similar to and different from your own experience as well as what may explain the difference(s)(1-2 paragraphs).
This is a good place to apply at least four extra sociological terms with brief definitions (Please underline or make them bold so that the instructor can understand which concepts you are using).
Finally, end the paper with a conclusion including a very brief summary and discussion of the relationship among individuals, society, culture, and history in light of socialization of your (grand)parent and yourself (i.e., the sociological imagination – please include this term and its definition in the paper)(1 paragraph).
