SOCIOLOGY 464 FAMILIES AND SOCIETY: BOOK REVIEW ESSAY INSTRUCTIONS
Please see the course iLearn page for exact due date. Please review all five pages of this instruction sheet.
Write a five-page review essay. The review should provide ample evidence that the student thoroughly read the book, as well as comprehends the major concepts, models, and themes developed in the book. The review requires that the student include several dimensions not included in most published book reviews, particularly, materials linking to other course readings.
Organize the review using the typology provided below.
Write the review as if one were writing to someone who had never read the book. State the purpose(s) or major theme(s) of the book.
All work must be typewritten (Size 12-point font: Times New Roman), double-spaced with 1.25-inch margins. Use standard indentation of three or five spaces for new paragraphs. Please write in essay form. Begin the essay in an inviting, enticing, perhaps provocative, way: provide an interesting quotation, begin with a startling statistic, ask a provocative question, recount a story, or tell a joke pertinent to your topic. Then move toward a thesis or a controlling statement. The thesis should provide a framework for the entire essay. In addition, the introductory paragraph should briefly state what the essay will cover and suggest a tone for the paper. You can read about thesis statements on-line at The Guide to Grammar and Writing website: http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/
Each paragraph within the essay should possess a topic sentence. The topic sentence links the paragraph to your paper thesis and reinforces the thesis of the essay. One should accompany the topic sentence of each paragraph with at least five sentences illustrating and elaborating upon your topic sentence. Effective paragraphs usually consist of at least five solid sentences. Please make smooth transitions between paragraphs. One can locate information about transitional sentences and phrases at the Guide to Grammar and Writing website: http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/
Citation should conform to the Chicago Manual of Style (style B). See examples below this paragraph.
a.) The example below shows how to cite an idea taken from the reading paraphrasing the idea in one’s own words:
Laws intended to prevent interracial sexuality in colonial America did not always work (D’Emilio & Freedman, 1988: 36; Franklin, 1989: 307). If you mention the author’s name in the sentence, omit it from the parenthesis.
b.) This example shows how to cite a quotation taken from the reading:
The ability of the state to prevent interracial sexuality was not absolute, as D’Emilio and Freedman argue: “The laws against miscegenation did not entirely prevent the formation of interracial unions” (1988: 36).
Please do not use extensive quotation. Paraphrase quotations. If you must use a quotation because you cannot accurately rephrase the quote without plagiarizing, follow the quote with the author’s name, a comma, the year of publication, a colon, two spaces, and the page number, all in parenthesis, same as above. However, one also provides quotation marks around the quoted materials. If you are still confused about how to use citation and how it differs from quotation, consult the Harvard Guide to Summarizing, Paraphrasing and Quoting. This resource provides a clear and thorough explanation of when to summarize, paraphrase and/or quote materials:

Relying on too much quotation will result in too high of a “similarity” score when you submit the paper to iLearn/Turnitin for plagiarism detection. There is 20% threshold meaning that 80% of the paper must be your own prose, not quotations. Hence, it’s essential that one paraphrase quotations. One should only use quotation if one cannot accurately rephrase the quote without plagiarizing or because the original is of such quality prose it would be a disservice not to quote it.
